Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower (pronounced c-enˈaɪzənhaʊər, ; October 14, 1890 March 28, 1969) was the 34th President of the United States, from 1953 until 1961. He was a five-star general in the United States Army. During World War II, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942-43 and the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944 45, from the Western Front. In 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO.

A Republican, Eisenhower entered the 1952 presidential race to counter the non-interventionism of Sen. Robert A. Taft, and to crusade against "Communism, Korea and corruption." He won by a landslide, defeating Democrat Adlai Stevenson and ending two decades of the New Deal Coalition holding the White House. As President, Eisenhower concluded negotiations with China to end the Korean War. His New Look, a policy of nuclear deterrence, gave priority to inexpensive nuclear weapons while reducing the funding for the other military forces to keep pressure on the Soviet Union and reduce federal deficits at the same time. He began NASA to compete against the Soviet Union in the space race. Unusually for an American President, Eisenhower strongly and very publicly opposed military moves by Israel, during the Suez Crisis. His intervention in the Crisis saved the Egyptian dictator Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser from an Anglo-French invasion. Near the end of his term, the Eisenhower Administration was embarrassed by the U-2 incident and was planning the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

On the domestic front, he covertly helped remove Joseph McCarthy from power but otherwise left most political actions to his Vice President, Richard Nixon. He was a moderate conservative who continued the New Deal policies, and in fact enlarged the scope of Social Security, and signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956. Though passive on civil rights at first, he sent federal troops to enforce the Supreme Court's ruling to desegregate schools. He was the first term-limited president in accordance with the 22nd Amendment.

Eisenhower's two terms were mainly peaceful, and generally prosperous except for a sharp economic recession in 1958 59. Although public approval for his administration was comparatively low by the end of his term, his reputation improved over time and in recent surveys of historians, Eisenhower is often ranked as one of the top ten U.S. Presidents. He was the last President who was born in the 19th century.

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The True Glory was a 1945 co-production of the US Office of War Information and the British Ministry of Information, documenting the victory on the Western Front, from Normandy to the collapse of the Third Reich. Although many individuals contributed to the film, British director Carol Reed is normally credited as the director. The film was promoted with the tagline, "The story of your victory...told by the guys who won it!" It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The documentary is notable for using multiple first person perspectives as narrative voices, somewhat in the manner of Tunisian Victory, except this time, instead of just an American GI and a British Tommie, the voices include a Canadian, a French resister, a Parisan civilian family, an African-American tank gunner, and several female perspectives including a nurse, and clerical staff. The film is introduced by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe, and many other prominent individuals appear in it including General George S. Patton. The Allies of World War II were the countries that opposed the Axis powers during the Second World War (1939--1945). Former Axis states contributing to the allied victory are not considered Allied states. The Allies became involved in World War II either because they had already been invaded, were directly threatened with invasion by the Axis or because they were concerned that the Axis powers ...

They found a derelict Connie, registration number N6937C, in storage at Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona. It was one of the last Constellations off Lockheed's assembly lines in 1958, and was built as a cargo plane for Slick Airways. Indeed, Kansas City was probably the only place in the world where this transformation could have taken place. There was a core of retired TWA employees living here: pilots, flight engineers, mechanics, hostesses, etc. All specialists in every aspect of propeller driven aircraft in general, and Constellations in particular. After 18 months in the hangar at Kansas City Downtown Airport, the Connie emerged, resplendent in her new Save A Connie livery. The Lockheed Constellation was converted from cargo to passenger configuration. She promptly began flying the Airshow circuit, where she continues to awe and inspire. In the late 90's, employees from TWA's Kansas City overhaul base donated a completely new paint job in the original TWA colors. The Star of America has been involved in television ...
