The United States Military Academy at West Point (also known as USMA, West Point, or Army) is a four-year coeducational federal service academy located at West Point, New York.

The academy sits on scenic high ground overlooking the Hudson River, 50 mi (80.5 km) north of New York City. The entire central campus is a national landmark and home to scores of historic sites, buildings, and monuments. The majority of the campus's neogothic buildings are constructed from gray and black granite. The campus is a popular tourist destination complete with a large visitor center and the oldest museum in the United States Army.

Candidates for admission must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a congressman. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as cadets. Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each spring with about 1,000 cadets graduating. Graduates are commissioned as second lieutenants. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code, which states that "a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do".

Because of the academy's age and unique mission, its traditions influenced other institutions. It was the first American college to have class rings, and its technical curriculum was a model for later engineering schools. West Point's student body has a unique rank structure and lexicon. All cadets reside on campus and dine together en masse on weekdays for breakfast and lunch. The academy fields fifteen men's and nine women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sports teams while every student competes in at least one sport, either at intramural or intercollegiate level, each semester. Its football team was a national power in the early and mid-20th century, winning three national championships. Its alumni and students are collectively referred to as "The Long Gray Line" and its ranks include two Presidents of the United States, numerous famous generals, and seventy-four Medal of Honor recipients.

Pearl Harbor Attack: As Yamamoto had planned, the First Air Fleet of six carriers armed with about 390 planes, commenced hostilities against the Americans on 7 December 1941, launching 353 aircraft against Pearl Harbor in two waves. The attack was a complete success according to the parameters of the mission which sought to sink at least four American battleships and prevent the US Fleet from interfering in Japan's southward advance for at least six months. American aircraft carriers were also considered a choice target, but were not in port at the time of the attack. Battle of Midway: Yamamoto's plan for Midway Island was an extension of his efforts to knock the US Pacific Fleet out of action long enough for Japan to fortify her defensive perimeter in the Pacific island chains. Yamamoto felt it necessary to seek an early, offensive decisive battle. The Midway battle was the turning point in the war. The US fleet led by the carriers USS Enterprise, Yorktown & Horney ambushed Yamamoto's carrier task force. Sinking all 4 of Japan's fleet carriers. Losing the USS Yorktown. From that point on in the Pacific war the US pushed forward & Japan retreated until the final surrender in August 1945. Adm. Yamamoto had wanted to avoid war with the US, but was over ruled by the Army & Emperor Hirohito. Isoroku Yamamoto (4 April 188418 April 1943) was Naval Marshal General and the commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet during World War II, a graduate of the Imperial Japanese Naval ...

Each Year one of my duties as United States Senator is to nominate qualified candidates to the United States military academies. I along with members of the Georgia Congressional Delegation host an annual academy day to familiarize students with the application and nomination process and to expose them to military life. I hope you will enjoy the Academy Day presentations found here on my web site.

First Lady Michelle Obama makes her first visit to West Point as the banquet speaker for the US Military Academy Class of 2011. Held in the historic Cadet Mess this is an address to over 3000 graduating cadets, their families and guests. This marks the final social event the cadets will take part in as a class prior to commencement and commissioning. This is also the first time a First Lady has spoken for the Cadets at West Point.

It's Induction day for new plebe candidates at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. On July 1, 2010, 1247 plebes arrived at the Academy for the beginning of four years of training on their way to (hopefully) becoming Naval officers. Here, we see a group of the plebes being trained on how to properly hold their "cover," aka their hats, as well as how to properly respond to anyone senior to them. CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman stopped in on what is known as "I-day," or plebe induction day, on his Road Trip 2010 project.
