Launched in Dallas, Texas, the CPL is considered the pioneer in video game tournaments, which have been held in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, Australia and Asia. The CPL's tournaments are open to all registrants, but due to the ESRB content rating of some video games, some CPL competitions are restricted to participants age 17 or older. The CPL has distributed more than US$3,000,000 in cash prizes. On August 25, 2008, the CPL announced that it was acquired by an investment group based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. On October 6, 2009, the new owners of the CPL held a gaming community event in Chengdu, China.On November 27, 2009, the new CPL announced a partnership with DreamHack to host large-scale gaming tournaments and programs in the Shanghai Expo's Swedish pavilion. The gaming events are set to take place throughout the course of the Expo, culminating in Championships at the Winter 2010 DreamHack.On August 23, 2010 NewWorld, the former parent company of the CPL, announced that the two-year acquisition of both the CPL and CAL were finalized and that the new owner was WoLong Ventures PTE of Singapore. A few days later both the CPL and CAL websites were relaunched. |
