Camden Council is a Local Government Area in New South Wales, Australia. The area of Camden Council along with the local government areas of the Wollondilly Shire and City of Campbelltown make up the historical reputable Macarthur Region. Being a significant part of the South-Western Sydney Growth Area, Camden Council represents a rapidly growing region which is expected to house a large portion of Sydney's population growth over the coming decade. To the north are residential developments including Oran Park (8000 homes) and Gregory Hills (2600 homes), whilst to the south are further developments of the Elderslie estate. The current Mayor of Camden is Councilor Chris Patterson, whilst the current Deputy Mayor is Councilor Greg Warren. The Camden Council is made up of 9 Councilors, three from each of the three wards - North, Central and South. Sitting Councilors for the South Ward are Debby Dewbery, Chris Patterson and Eva Campbell. Sitting Councilors for the Central Ward are Greg Warren, Cindy Cagney and Fred Anderson. North-Ward sitting councilors are David Funnell, Lara Symkowiak and Michael Cottrell. At a public rally in early November 2007 the development application in the Camden area South West of Sydney on behalf of a Muslim group, the Quranic Society, for a $19 million Muslim school with the capacity for 1, 200 students, was met with protest amongst some State Members of Parliament, the local Camden Council and neighbouring residents. |
