It is often referred to as the Region of Waterloo or just Waterloo Region. The Region is 1,382 square kilometres in size and its regional seat of government is in Kitchener. The population estimate for the Kitchener CMA (which excludes the Townships of Wellesley and Wilmot) as of 2010 is 492,390. The estimated population for the region was 534,900 as of 2009. The difference in estimates results primarily from the census undercount of temporary residents such as students.
