Pondicherry ( or -enpɒndɨˈʃɛri; , -tapud̪ɯttʃeːɾ̪i) is a city, an urban agglomeration and a municipality in Pondicherry district in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. Both the Union Territory and the city were previously known as Pondicherry before September 2006. Pondicherry is the largest urban agglomeration in Puducherry UT and has a population of 505,959 according to the 2001 Census Of India. It lies in the coast of Bay of Bengal and 135 KM south of Chennai. The city was established in 1673 under French rule and remained until 1954 as capital of French India.

Not only does it sprinkle the web advertisements, it also smothers the pages of tourist pamphlets that one receives in Pondicherry. But you see, the thing is that once you receive those pamphlets, well, let's just say that you know better. Pondicherry is not a peaceful place by US standards, but as far as India is concerned it is. I've come to realize this after doing some travelling around south India and I have come to appreciate many things about this city. I've discovered a good selection of stores where I have become a regular customer- and by regular, I mean about once a week because the half hour trip down town isn't something to be done everyday. So this blog is about Pondicherry (the City) and how I am supporting the local economy (or at least all of my favorite shops). I've narrowed Pondicherry down to about a city block where I can purchase everything that I need or maybe the city planners did this since this area is mostly frequented by tourists.
