Lithgow is a city situated in New South Wales, Australia and is the centre of the local political division City of Lithgow. It is located in a mountain valley named Lithgow's Valley by John Oxley in honour of William Lithgow, the first Auditor-General of New South Wales.

Lithgow is located on the Great Western Highway, about 150 km (93.2 mi) or two hours drive west of Sydney, or via the old mountain route, Bells Line of Road, from Windsor. Geologically, it is situated on the far western side of the Sydney basin.

Lithgow is surrounded by a varied landscape which includes national parks, one of which, the Blue Mountains National Park, is a World Heritage Area. The Wollemi National Park is home to the Jurassic-age tree the Wollemi Pine, which was found growing in a remote canyon in the park. Geologically, it is located in the far western edges of the Sydney basin.

Steam Trains - Double Headers (NSW) (1/6). The sight and sound of double headed locomotives would have to be one of the most spectacular experiences of the railway scene during the era in New South Wales. We take an evocative look at the 1960's, including numerous loco combinations and less common pairings. Locations include: Lithgow - Orange Wallerwang - Mudgee Orange - Molong Molong - Parkes Molong - Dubbo Orange - Wellington - Dubbo Sydney - Goulburn Gosford - Newcastle NOTE: Some poor quality due to the age of the footage. This is a photo slide of where I live and why I love the beauty of the mountains. Although it doesn't snow much here, when it does the place changes into something really beautiful. The scenery you will see is all with in forty minutes drive of Lithgow. I don't have music accompanying it as I didn't know what I could use that would be allowable without infringing on copyright laws. So it is Kevin doing the Doco. Because of the depth of the valleys, or is that the height of the mountains? there is a lot of hang-gliding and abseiling done around here. It doesn't get as cold as some countries do in winter, however the summers do get damn warm. Though the humidity is not as stifling as it is around Sydney and suburbs. There is only two weeks of the year in summer where you need a fan to keep you cool the rest of the time the nights are beautiful.

Entry from: Lithgow, Australia Entry Title: "Lithgow in the Blue Mountains" Entry: "Today was our longest drive to date of 540 km which saw our arrival West of Sydney at the base of the Blue Mountains. We stayed here for four days in a great campsite, again often on our own, but it was refreshing one night to meet a couple doing a very similar trip to us who were a similar age, agreeing that you must do what you have to do, when you have to do it, not putting it off until tomorrow, what you can do when you can do it in case tomorrow never comes!!! (so take heed everyone) During our stay here we thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the Zig-Zag railway. This comprised of taking a diesel down the Zig-Zag, stopping en-route to view the old scenic viaducts and watch the steam train climbing the gradient. We then had a conducted tour around the work-shops before catching the steam train back to the 'top' station. We also visited the famous Jenolan Caves (supposedly the finest in Oz) and the cave entrance was, in itself, quite spectacular. Apparently it would take a total of five days to explore the whole of the cave network, but we made do with a mere one and a half hour guided tour which was also awesome. We then explored the entrance cave and various walkways under our own steam. A camera just cannot capture ...
