Mackay is a city on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 970 km (602.7 mi) north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar.

There is controversy about the geographic location of the region, with most people referring to it as a part of central Queensland, though much confusion still lies within the Queensland Government, with government services being provided through both Townsville (north Queensland) and Rockhampton (central Queensland). Generally, the area is known as the Mackay Whitsunday Region. Equally, there has always been much contention over the pronunciation of the name Mackay. Correspondence received by Mackay City Library in 2007, from descendants of John Mackay, confirms that the correct pronunciation is -enməˈkaɪ (rhyming with sky), from the Gaelic name "MacAoidh" which is pronounced "i" not "ay".

9.50 min. | 4.92 user rating Cyclone Yasi is coming to North Queensland with a rating of 3 at present but building into a Category 4, she's one massive system some 700 kilometres across, now that's massive, so decided to do a running report on it's effect on Mackay, we're on the outer edge of it, and hopefully should come out OK, but Cairns is right in it's path, and that's where I'd rather not be. Fingers crossed for Cairns and all other northern towns and cities. Looks like will cross Wednesday night which is good news at it's co-incides with the smallest of the high tides. Plus add in the storm surge of an expected 1 metre will result in more flooding. Please see reports below and helpful information if you're affected. The web is great and check BOM (bureau of Meterology) websites with all the latest forecasts, will Update again with further video on Mackay, Please subscribe for more great fishing tips, and Cyclone Yasi updates Cheers Greg Check out our website for more great fishing charters from Mackay at North Queensland from Mackay to Cape York, is facing a 'potentially very deadly event', according to Premier Anna Bligh, but emergency services say they are ready for Cyclone Yasi. 1.92 min. | 4.0 user rating Fishing mackay is just a quick fishing video and slideshow of some of the Highlights of 2009 with Reefari Fishing Charters, and this is only some of the catch. The fishing is truly phenomenal off Mackay and has even blown me away, with some Mega Catches and Mega fish. We've been fishing alot of remote untouched fishing reefs and shoals, and the results speak for themselves. Some of our bests were several Red emperor to 15 Kilograms, and heaps around the 10 kilo mark. Some extra large Nannygai with one going 15 kilos, another 12 kilos, and several around that 10 Kilogram Mark. Massive coral trout with Blue Spot's pushing 10 kilogram or more. We did more deep water work this year with heaps of quality Bar Cheek coral trout up to 5 Kilo's. The Giant Trevally fishing is world class with heaps of GT's around the islands, and outer great barrier Reef and are a fish we'll be seeing alot more of, Our best was two Monster pushing 35 kilo's and numerous fish around the 20 kilo plus mark. Popper and stickbait fishing for these is something you must do, with spectacular surface strikes, and would have to be one of the most adrenaline pumping forms of fishing. Spanish Mackerel are also common and alot of fish are taken around the 20 Kilo plus, with our best pushing 30 Kilo. Don't forget the goldspot cod, Some big fish pushing 20 kg +, with our best at 30 kilos, Just huge and always try and release these big fish as no good for eating.
