Broken Hill is an isolated mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia. The world's largest mining company, BHP Billiton, has roots in the town.

Broken Hill is located near the border with South Australia on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (national route 32) and the Silver City Highway (national route 79), in the Barrier Range. It is 220 m (721.8 ft) above sea level, has an average rainfall of 235 mm (9.3 in) and summer temperatures that reach well over 40 C (129.6 F). The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500 km (310.7 mi) to the southwest. Unlike the rest of New South Wales, Broken Hill (and the surrounding region) observes Australian Central Standard Time, UTC+9:30, a time zone it shares with South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Broken Hill has been called The Silver City, the Oasis of the West, and the Capital of the Outback. Although over 1100 km (683.5 mi) west of Sydney, and surrounded by semi-desert, the town still manages colourful park and garden displays, and offers a number of attractions.

Entry from: Silverton and Broken Hill, Australia Entry Title: "Silverton and Broken Hill" Entry: "Thursday 21st August Ches is responsible for the worst application of auto suggestion I have ever experienced. After a lengthy discussion about her dreams, and my claim that I never dream, Ches closed the discussion with the statement that while I might not remember my dreams in the morning, I do dream....everyone dreams. Guess what, I dreamt all night. The worst nights sleep I can ever remember, and I awoke exhausted. Despite our best intentions to get away by 8.00 am at the absolute latest...no matter what, we left the motel at 8.30. Ches justified it on the grounds that Broken Hill is on "Central" time....30 min. behind eastern standard time, so was infact 8.00 am. I decided to apply some discipline on her, and declared that we would now have to leave Broken Hill for the 700 km drive to Dubbo by midday EST no matter what. We decided to drive out to Silverton and the Mundi Mundi Plains lookout. Again, I hadn't planned on the dozens of "Dips" on the 30 km journey. The road is sealed, however every 500 meters or so, the road dips to allow flash flood water to pass across the road. The side effect is that various degrees of mud is deposited in the bottom of the dip, so you need to slow to be safe. As we ...
