Gandzasar monastery ( ) is a 13th century Armenian monastery situated in the Mardakert region of Nagorno-Karabakh, near the village of Vank. "Gandzasar" means treasure mountain or hilltop treasure in Armenian. The monastery holds relics believed to belong to St Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. Gandzasar was the residence of the catholicoi of the Albanian Catholicate of the Armenian Apostolic Church from about 1400 until 1816, and is now the seat of the Archbishop of Artsakh.

The construction of Gandzasar began in 1216, and it was completed in 1238 and consecrated on July 22, 1240. The complex is protected by high walls. Within the complex is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (ÕÕ¸ÖÖÕ¢ ÕÕ¸Õ¾Õ°Õ¡Õ¶Õ¶Õ¸Ö ÕÕ¯ÖÕ¿Õ«Õ¹ Õ¥Õ¯Õ¥Õ²Õ¥ÖÕ« in Armenian), built between 1216 and 1238.The drum of its dome has exquisite bas-reliefs that depict the Crucifixion, Adam and Eve, and two ministers holding a model of the church above their heads as an offering to God. The bas-reliefs have been compared to the elaborate carvings of Aghtamar, and some art historians consider the monastery to represent one of the masterpieces of Armenian architecture. Gandzasar's cathedral church shares many architectural forms with the main churches of two other Armenian monasteries also built in the mid-13th century: Hovhannavank Monastery and Harichavank Monastery.

I woke up at 9:30, played with the kids, had breakfast with Anna and Narine, and did more or less nothing. Vladik and his older daughter went to Yerevan to hospital, I think she has to undergo some kind of surgery. Anna called the bus station to ask about buses to Ganzasar. One goes at 15:30 at 1pm I can buy a ticket (I will, there might be lot of people going and I wouldn't find a seat). And so I decided to walk around Stepanakert a bit more. I confirmed my yesterdays impressions about the city being quite European. Slowly I directed my steps to the bus station. And lucky I did - the bus doesn't leave at 15:30 but 14:30 and you cant buy tickets in advance. So I picked up my things at Anna´s, returned to the station and hopped on a bus going to Vank. I was a bit nervous because I knew I am in the last bus going to, and therefore from Vank, which means I will have to stay there overnight. The trip wasn't very pleasant. Everyone kept talking to me, I didn't understand, they were laughing and I didn't know wether they were laughing at me. Luckily the journey didn't take too long. I was told that there is a hotel Tsitanik in Vank, where you can stay for free. I didn't <b>...</b>
