Akdamar Island (also known as Akhtamar, and Aght'amar; ; , -hyɑχtʰɑmɑr) is the second by size of four islands in Lake Van in the south of Eastern Anatolia Region, Turkey, about 0.7 km2 in size, situated about 3 km from the shoreline. At the western end of the island a hard, grey, limestone cliff rises 80 m above the lake's level (1,912 m above sea level). The island declines to the east to a level site where a spring provides ample water. It is home to a tenth century Armenian Cathedral church, known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Cross (915-921), and was the seat of an Armenian Catholicos from 1116 to 1895.

They will provide naval superiority to Armenia in all coastal territory. According to the Armenian News Agency (ANA), the Armenian Navy plans to make 4 of these boats seaborn also in the Lake Van to spy on the continuing restoration of the historic Armenian church on the Akdamar Island. Lake Van is the biggest lake of Turkey close to the border with Iran and Nahjevan.

www.TravelsWithSheila.com There is only one way to access the beyond fantabulous Armenian Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island. By boat. Private and tour boats ply turquoise Lake Van for the 40-minute ride to Akdamar Island all day. Off the private Explore boat onto the jetty for a walk up and sit-down, while Oz related a tale about how Akdamar Island got its name. Part is on the video but the "short version" is An Armenian princess named "Tamar" lived on the island...fell in love with a commoner who would swim from the mainland to the island each night, guided by a light she lit for him. Father learned of visits, smashed light, boy drowns in the middle of the lake, with a dying cry of "Akh, Tamar"...Akdamar. Wait until you see the following videos of the Church. Beyond anything ex-Marine and Travels With Sheila have every seen....

www.TravelsWithSheila.com The unique and most unusual Armenian Church of Holy Cross has facades designed by the Armenian architect, Trdat Mendet ("Manual") who also built the cathedral in Ani. Built of pink sandstone brought to Akdamar Island from distant quarries, neither ex-Marine nor Travels With Sheila had any inkling how magnificent the relief carvings on the outside would be. Biblical stories decorate all facades of the church and depending on the time of day, each view looks different. There are friezes of animals, hunting scenes, heads of men... I'll let you discover the reliefs yourself and prepare to be awed by Trdat's artistry!

www.TravelsWithSheila.com This incredible Church of Holy Cross on Akdamar Island dates from 915-921 AD Can Travels With Sheila assume that "Manual" worked on the carvings and bas reliefs for six years? The south facade had Jonah being swallowed by the whale while the whale had the head of a dog. Huh? Abraham sacrificing Isaac. Noah's Ark. At one time, all the eyes in these reliefs were inlaid with precious gems! As beautiful as the inside walls were, it is the unusual biblical scenes on the outside walls that this church owes its fame to. Niches, pilasters, walls...all decorated with faded frescoes throughout the inside. A person would have to stand inside all day to really get take it all in. Really...really...a "do not miss"...

www.TravelsWithSheila.com Ah yes...whatever did people do before mobile phones? Our boat from Akdamar Island back to the mainland went "ka-ka" and the group sat, gently swaying on Lake Van until a snazzy looking, high powered cruiser came for us. Instead of towing, we gracefully cruised in side-by-side. Lunch for those who happen to like mackerel (I do not - a gazillion bones) before busing back to Van. We occupied ourselves watching tourists try to swim in highly saline Lake Van. Think...a floating dog paddle rather than swimming.

www.TravelsWithSheila.com The west facade is considered to be the least interesting with St. Matthew in the center holding the gospel, Jesus and King Gagik presenting a model of the church to Jesus while carvings of angels and animals surround the entrance. Bas reliefs on the north facade of Church of Holy Cross had Adam and Eve eating the apple in the Garden of Eden while the serpent is depicted on the other side. St. George slaying the dragon. Delilah cutting Samson's hair. Daniel in the lion's den. The builder carved and designed everything in the bible but the kitchen sink. Absolutely the most interesting outside of a church we've ever seen. .... and there was still more!

Entry from: Van, Turkey Entry Title: "Van Again" Entry: "My first day on my second visit to Van was pretty much a wasted day. I got in around noon, concluded it was too late to try and backtrack the few miles for a visit to the island of Akdamar after checking in to a hotel. So I first went to the Archaeology Museum, which had been closed on my last, brief visit to Van. It was small, and most of the exhibits are devoted to the local Urartan civilization that inhabited the area in 9th to 6th century BC Upon walking out I paused at the gate to put on my sunglasses, and was engaged in conversation in English by a carpet dealer from across the street. Not directly about carpets, of course, but in the general way of all new meetings. Spying across the way a nice looking one (to my taste, at least) I went with him to his shop to see what else was there. I remember visiting a shop in Erzurum three years ago. And if I can generalize from these two visits--and really knowing nothing at all about carpets--I'd say the carpets and kilims I have seen here in the east are more interesting. That's the only word I can think of right now. They are perhaps cheaper, too. I don't know, because I don't price them, always telling these fellows I have no intention to buy anything. In fact I'm now joking to them that I've ...

Entry from: Tatvan, Turkey Entry Title: "Akdamar the Island in the lake Van" Entry: "Leaving oin the morning from Hakkari a big and unknown to us. We have enjoyed a very good night after a delicious meal and some wine in our room. Leaving the area with the high rugged mountains it changes into a high plateau, which would be ideal to build a 4000 hole golf course over high passes. (2740m and 2230m) We are underestimating the availability of gas stations with lead free gasoline (only diesel petrol stations are abundant) and we end up going down with the engine switched off to save our rest. In a little town we can get some gas (actually cheaper than the official price) from a local unknown source that allows us to get to Van the city with the next suitable gas. Van was really a good place as we could fill up our tank and we could as well burn a CD from a chip that had denied to be writeable from one of our cameras. (all pictures are saved) We continued then along the lake shore until the place where the ferry boats are leaving for the island where Akdamar is. This is a now newly renovated Armenian Church with paintings inside and outside the old testimony as ornaments. The place and the church are really unique and it was worthwhile to visit this other UNESCO world heritage place. en.wikipedia.org (English ...
