Some time after 1965, the Monastery of Horomos was mostly destroyed by the Turkish government. The tomb of King Ashot III (953-977) which existed at least up to 1920 is nowhere to be found. As recently as 2003, systematic destruction of the monastery continues. However, recent photographs from travellers do not seem to indicate systematic destruction. The ruins are substantial, if neglected. Much damage can probably be attributed to weather conditions and the severe earthquakes to which this region is prone, as the destruction in nearby Gyumri testifies, following the Spitak earthquake. |
