The President of the European Council (sometimes incorrectly referred to as the President of the European Union) is a principal representative of the European Union (EU) on the world stage, and the person presiding over and driving forward the work of the European Council. This institution comprises the college of heads of state or government of EU member states as well as the President of the European Commission, and provides political direction to the European Union (EU). The current president is Herman Van Rompuy.

From 1975 to 2009, the head of the European Council was an unofficial position (often referred to as President-in-Office) held by the head of state or government of the member state holding the semiannually rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union at any given time. However, since the Treaty of Lisbon, article 15 of Treaty on European Union states that the European Council appoints a full time president for a two-and-a-half year term, with the possibility of renewal once. Appointments, as well as the removal of incumbents, require a double majority support in the council.

On 19 November 2009, the European Council agreed that its first president under the Lisbon Treaty would be Herman Van Rompuy (European People's Party, Belgium). Van Rompuy took office when the Lisbon Treaty came into force on 1 December 2009 with a term stretching until 31 May 2012.

European council president Herman Van Rompuy on Wednesday said that that despite concern about its long term future the EU "is still sexy". Polls continue to show the popularity of the EU at an all-time low. Yet, speaking at the high-profile 'State of the European Union conference in Brussels, Van Rompuy, a self-professed federalist, made a strong defence of the EU. "As long as a club attracts new members it means it is in good shape," said the former Belgian PM said, His comments came as over 500 business leaders met at the first 'state of the EU' forum at the Egmont palace in Brussels to discuss how to revitalise the European dream.

Peter Dow's website - scot.tk For Freedom Forums - http Rice for President - groups.yahoo.com BBC: Tirade against 'damp rag' EU president shocks MEPs news.bbc.co.uk A British Eurosceptic MEP has unleashed a volley of insults against the President of the European Council. Nigel Farage, who leads UK Independence Party (UKIP) MEPS in the European parliament, said Herman van Rompuy had "the charisma of a damp rag". He compared the former Belgian prime minister to a "low-grade bank clerk" and said he came from a "non-country". The attack, which stunned the chamber, came as Mr Von Rompuy made his maiden appearance in parliament in Brussels. "I don't want to be rude," Mr Farage began, before launching into a personal attack lasting several minutes. "Who are you? I'd never heard of you, nobody in Europe had ever heard of you," Mr Farage thundered, as noisy disapproval at his intervention in the chamber rose. 'Competent and dangerous' "Oh, I know democracy is not popular with you lot," he said, addressing the members of parliament as they voiced their surprise. Mr Farage - known for his outspoken interventions - did, however, admit that he thought Mr Van Rompuy was "competent and capable", adding that this made him "dangerous". "I have no doubt that your intention is to be the quiet assassin of European democracy and of European nation states," he said. Mr Farage's party, UKIP, campaigns for the withdrawal of Britain from the European Union. It has 13 representatives in the ...

Rice for President - groups.yahoo.com For Freedom Forums - figh.tk Peter Dow's website - http Condoleezza Rice for President of the European Union. Condoleezza Rice, the former US Secretary of State under President Bush would have made a great president of the USA and still may do, perhaps if she runs in 2012 but until then we Europeans should give Condi a wee shot of being President of Europe. If she is elected US president, she can decide if she wants to be president of both the EU and the USA or just the USA. Can an American become the President of Europe? Why not? Europe does not have closed borders - no-one has set up a new iron curtain have they? People come from all over the world to study and to work in Europe. I have Indians living to my left, right and above me and most welcome they are. If you have skills anywhere in the world, Europe has a job for you - this is true in the private and public sectors, so what's the problem? It would be stupid and self-harming not to hire the best in the world for Europe's MOST important job, president of the EU and Condi is the best, so hire her. How hard can it be to make Rice a citizen of a EU member country if that was the rule? After they captured him in WW2, the Americans made Wernher von Braun the German rocket scientist (who was working for Hitler trying to bomb us all to hell) an American citizen didn't they, and so got to the moon? So what matters is if the foreigner has the skills that your union needs. Citizenships ...

Collapse of Eurozone immininent - euronews: Interview with Herman Van Rompuy 27/10 20:11 CET President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy faces the task, with others, of convincing EU member states to go along with a proposal by Germany and France to reform the bloc's Growth and Stability Pact on economic governance. This will come up for discussion at a European summit this Thursday and Friday in Brussels. euronews asked him about that in an exclusive interview. Sergio Cantone, euronews: European Council President Van Rompuy, what is your role going to be with France and Germany about to propose a revision or reform of the Stability Pact? Herman van Rompuy: The countries have varying positions. I have to find a consensus. That's my role. It's not about imposing my own point of view. If I were to do that, I would make compromise or consensus impossible, so I don't do it. euronews: But, on the other hand, what do you think about the content of the proposal that came out of Deauville? Herman van Rompuy: An impression has been created that the Deauville agreement, as it is being called, implies a toning down of the system of sanctions. No. What was said in Deauville was only a reiteration of what is in the Treaty. The Treaty says clearly that to classify a country as being in a situation of excessive deficit there has to be a decision by the Council of Ministers, made up of all 27, with a certain majority. But that has been the case since the beginning because that is ...
