The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā (Persian: مسجد جھان نما, Devanagari: , the 'World-reflecting Mosque'), commonly known as the Jama Masjid ( , ) of Delhi, is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal, and completed in the year 1628 AD, it is the largest and best-known mosque in India. It lies at the origin of a very busy central street of Old Delhi, the Chawri Bazar Road.

The later name, Jama Masjid, is a reference to the weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims, Jummah, which are usually done at a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or "jāmi' masjid". The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the north gate, including an antique copy of the Qur'an written on deer skin.

Jama Masjid, Delhi Video

Shot by the legendary Jack Cardiff - the Oscar-winning cinematographer of 'Black Narcissus' - this is one of a number of short films that he made in India in the late 1930s. As much a study to show off his brilliant Technicolor photography as it is a portrait of Delhi, this film presents the city - and the period - as rarely seen before. After a brief historical and architectural preamble, the film moves into an extended sequence that shows the Jama Masjid and stunningly coloured saris among the gardens of the Red Fort. Then it's off to New Delhi to see how the British (in the form of architect Edwin Lutyens) 'taught the Indians' how to build... However, despite the colonial pomposity of the commentary, the record of New Delhi in the '30s is extraordinary - especially the scenes of Connaught Place that appear as a sea of calm and green lawns. (Robin Baker) This film is part of 'Before Midnight' - a touring programme of 27 films shot in India prior to Independence.

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India, and also one of the best known monuments across the country. It is a synthesis of the best of Indo-Islamic architecture. Commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1650 AD, this mosque was the last architectural wonder created by him. It took six years to complete the entire construction work of this splendid architectural masterpiece. However, behind the façade of majesty, characterized by wide stairways and arched gateways, the structure has an innate solemn appeal, that can be deciphered by the discerning tourists. Measuring 65 x 35 m, Jama Masjid has three gateways, two minarets and four towers. This five-storied mosque has been constructed in red sandstone and white marble, and it can hold twenty five thousand worshippers at a time. The mosque is located in the heart of the crowded marketplace of Old Delhi, and towards the east of the mosque stands the Red Fort. One can enter the mosque from both the north and the south gates. However, the main entrance is from the eastern gate that is facing the Red Fort that was once used by the emperors. Today, it remains closed on the weekdays. This imposing structure speaks volumes about the aesthetic vision and the religious bent of mind of the great ruler Shah Jahan. Muslims from different parts of Delhi, India and the world come here to offer their prayers to the Allah.
