Agra Fort ( , ) is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.

It is the most important fort in India. The great Mugals, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travelers and dignitaries.

it was originally a brick fort, held by the sikarwar.it was mentioned for the first time in 1080 AD when a Ghaznavid force captured it. Sikandar Lodi (1487 οΏ½ 1517) was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted to Agra and lived in the fort. He governed the country from here and Agra assumed the importance of the second capital. He died in the fort in 1517 and his son, Ibrahim Lodi, held it for nine years until he was defeated and killed at Panipat in 1526. Several palaces, wells and a mosque were built by him in the fort during his period.

After Panipat, Mughals captured the fort and a vast treasure - which included a diamond that was later named as the Koh-i-Noor diamond - was seized. Babur stayed in the fort in the palace of Ibrahim. He built a baoli (step well) in it. Humayun was crowned here in 1530. Humayun was defeated in Bilgram in 1540. Sher Shah held the fort for five years. The Mughals defeated the Afghans finally at Panipat in 1556.

Realizing the importance of its central situation, Akbar made it his capital and arrived in Agra in 1558. His historian, Abdul Fazal, recorded that this was a brick fort known as 'Badalgarh' . It was in a ruined condition and Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone from Barauli area in Rajasthan. Architects laid the foundation and it was built with bricks in the inner core with sandstone on external surfaces. Builders worked on it for eight years, completing it in 1573.

It was only during the reign of Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, that the site took on its current state. The legend is that Shah Jahan built the beautiful Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan tended to have buildings made from white marble, often inlaid with gold or semi-precious gems. He destroyed some of the earlier buildings inside the fort in order to make his own.

At the end of his life, Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort. It is rumored that Shah Jahan died in Musamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with a view of the Taj Mahal.

The fort was the site of a battle during the Indian rebellion of 1857, which caused the end of the British East India Company's rule in India, and led to a century of direct rule of India by Britain.

Agra Fort Ever since Babur defeated and killed Ibrahin Lodi at Panipat in 1526, Agra played an important center of Mughal Empire. Akbar chose this city on the bank of River Yamuna as his capital and proceeded to build a strong citadel for the purpose. It is said that he destroyed the damaged old fort of Agra for the purpose and raised this grand group of monuments instead in red sandstone. Started in 1565, it took eight years and thirty-five lakh rupees to complete its construction and is second only to Taj in Agra. Qasim Khan Mir Barr-u-Bahr supervised the construction of this building. ------------------------------------------------------------ Taj Mahal The epitome of love, the elegy in marble, Taj Mahal is one of the most graceful and extravagant monuments in India. The seventh wonder of the world, it attracts thousands of tourists every year. A symbol of endless love and devotion of Emperor Shah Jehan to his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj is a befitting tribute to so romantic-a-love story and so divine an emotion that binds two souls forever. A visit to Taj Mahal, the mausoleum of Mumtaz, is a rare experience. It has become a signature monument of Indian architecture and someone has rightly said that Taj jas been designed like a palace and finished like a jewel. What can I say about AGRA and the TAJ which hasnt been said yet? It is the home of the most famous building on this planet, everybody knows of - the love story behind it, the governmental crisis this expensive building caused bringing the kingdom close to bankruptcy (and the ones that should have followed, like the black Taj, an identical building completely out of black marble on the other side of the river...), so that the founder was put into jail by his own son trying to safe the Mogul empire.....well, the Red Fort must certainly be the nicest jail on earth, plus he had a great view on his beloved Taj ;-) But hey! Wasnt this the best investment ever done for Agra in the long run??? Or what about a daytrip to Fatehpur Sikri - the deserted city built by the great Akbar - a military genius but not so clever in city constructions....well, his mistake is the tourists luck, since nothing really changed this place. Well, you all know it, so just enjoy the pics as an appetizer for your upcoming visit! PS: If the 750Rs entrance fee are REALLY and ONLY used for keeping this world heritage in check, than it is worth every rupee.

Our first trip to India. From Delhi to the Taj Mahal to Agra Fort. Attention!!! All of the guidebooks that we read said that Agra was a slummy city not worth your time outside visiting the Taj Mahal, but after a day there, we fell completely in love with the city and the people. It's a financially poor city, but it has a genuine presence, worth exploring.
