Fathehpur Sikri ( , ) is a city and a municipal board in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Built near the much older Sikri, the historical city of Fatehabad, as it was first named, was constructed by Mughal emperor Akbar beginning in 1570, in honour of Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti, who lived in a cavern on the ridge at Sikri, and foretold the birth of his son, who was named Prince Salim after him, and later succeeded Akbar to the throne of the Mughal Empire, as Jahangir. Fatehabad later acquired the name Fatehpur, and gave rise to present name Fatehpur Sikri. It was the first planned city of the Mughals and also first one in Mughal architecture, an amalgamation of Indian architecture, Persian and Islamic architecture, and served as the Mughal Empire's capital from 1571 until 1585. Though the court took 15 years to build, it was abandoned after only 14 years because the water supply was unable to sustain the growing population. and unrest in the North-West. Today, the complex of buildings, including the extant royal palaces, courts and the Jama Masjid is a popular tourist attraction, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The site itself is a ghost town, though the city has a population of 28804 as per 2001 census.

Fatehpur Sikri was planned as a capital city by the great Akbar, but failed due to water shortness. And this might be the reason why we, as tourists, are able to visit these ruins as a beautiful ghost city, that did not change from ancient times. The Great Mosque is still in use and perfectly preserved. It is a great areal to walk around, but when people/salesman greet you in three different languages, you can be sure it is a main tourist place. We were lucky to be there in off-season and "enjoyed" the monsoon with it ;-) Despite putting all the other great Maharaja places in ashes, Akbar was supposed to be open minded, having women of three different beliefs and the entrance gate of the mosque quotes a saying from Jesus Christ..... Another interesting part of the mosque is the white marble tomb of a saint, said to be able of bringing sons to a childless family. Even today women come here to put thread knots on the tomb for this reason. A couple of years ago my sister visited this place, too, on her trip. I heard she did the same - but now she got already two sons.....I wonder how many threads she left there :-) Fatehpur Sikri offers plenty of buildings, gardens and little palace to see, but one of the main architectural interests deserves the Public Audience hall. A beautifully decorated pillar supports the seat of the Mogul emperor and from that point, four bridges leave to the corners of the building, where supposedy the scholars or ministers stood.

Fatehpur Sikri is a city and a municipal board in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The buildings of Fatehpur Sikri show a synthesis of various regional schools of architectural craftsmanship. Built during the second half of the 16th century by the Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri (the City of Victory) near Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire for some 10 years. The complex of monuments, all in a uniform architectural style, includes one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid.

This is a trip early this year through North India. Agra, Delhi, Jaipur, Nimrana, Fatehpur Sikri.. Was a great experience with the trip done in motorcycle most of the times. One Yahama, Suzuki and in a Royal Enfield Bullet 350. Mixed with Enigma's music which seems somehow suitable to describe India's magic.

Akbar is widely considered the greatest of the Mughal emperors. He was only 13 when he became emperor. Although he was himself illiterate, Akbar had so much interest in learning, that his courts at Delhi, Agra, and Fatehpur Sikri became centers of the arts, letters, and learning. He founded his own religious cult, the Dini-Ilahi or the Diving Faith. In order to govern this territories well, Akbar developed a bureaucracy, which was among the most efficient. He also gave autonomy to his imperial provinces. Akbar lost his best friends and his most faithful servants before he finally succumbed to a very painful abdominal illness. He was buried at Sikandra near Agra in a splendid mausoleum of enormous proportions, which he himself has caused to be built. The memorial stands witness had caused to be built. The memorial stands witness to one of the greatest emperors, India ever had. This animated video brings alive the memory of a great ruler of daring vision and religious tolerance.

Fatehpur Sikri was built during 1571 and 1585 by the Mughal Emperor. This deserted city has retained many of the old structures, because of the efforts of the Archaeological department Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal architectural splendour at its height. Though the city is in ruins, it is a place to visit if one comes to Agra. But in real terms Fatehpur Sikri is a place where one should spend some time. It is the best example of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Fatehpur Sikri Mosque is said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca and has designs, derived from the Persian & Hindu architecture. Prime Attractions of Fatehpur Sikri: Diwan-I-Am or the Hall Of Public Audience diwan-khana-I-khaas or Hall Of Private Audience.
