Maurine Karagianis (born August 17, 1950) is a Canadian politician, currently the New Democratic Party MLA for the riding of Esquimalt-Royal Roads in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

She was first elected in the 2005 election, garnering almost 50 percent of votes cast and 2,895 more votes than the next closest candidate. She was re-elected in 2009 to the new constituency of Esquimalt-Royal Roads.

In August 2007, Karagianis was appointed the Official Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Transportation in New Democrat leader Carole James' shadow cabinet. She had previously served as the Official Opposition Critic for the Ministry Children and Family Development, and, prior to that, the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue. Following the 2009 election, Maurine was appointed once again as the Official Opposition Critic for the Ministry of Children and Family Development and she holds that portfolio to the present day.

Prior to serving as an MLA, she was elected as a municipal councillor in Esquimalt in 1996, and re-elected in 1999 and again in 2002. She is an entrepreneur, opening her own retail fashion store, operating a wholesale venture and a successful import/export business. She was also a co-founder of the Sunshine Folkfest in Powell River, BC.

Starting in 1998, she served three years with the provincial government as assistant to three NDP cabinet ministers first in the Social Services ministry and then in Transportation and Highways. She recently ran a consulting company that works with non-profit organizations and First Nations communities to create affordable housing.

M. Karagianis: I rise today to share with the House the story of Pedder Bay, a community in my constituency. For years Pedder Bay has been home to nearly 30 manufactured homes â a great, friendly and affordable place where neighbours knew each other by name and looked after each other. That all came crashing to an end about two years ago when the homeowners were served notice of eviction by the landowner. Under the Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Act, owners are eligible for only 12 months of pad rental as compensation. That works, in their case, to about $3000 per manufactured home, and it isn't nearly enough. The homeowners challenged the eviction in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and they lost. Now many of the owners are faced with the enormous and heartbreaking task of picking up and moving on. Some of them are trying to move homes that because of their aging condition, are simply not movable. Some are facing mortgage debt on homes that no longer exist. Without adequate compensation the residents are facing the loss of affordable, independent living, bankruptcy and the loss of equity. Some are going to be homeless. I asked the former Minister of Housing to act, but no help has been forthcoming. Market forces have pushed property prices upward, putting more and more manufactured home parks at risk. Each time it happens, as in Pedder Bay, we lose affordable housing. It saddens me greatly, the loss that is now being suffered by Terrill, Maureen, Jean, Christine ...

M. Karagianis: My question today is for the Minister of Transportation. While transit fares in British Columbia have increased to being the highest in Canada, the minister's handpicked TransLink board has met in secret and given themselves a pay raise that amounts to half a million dollars â dollars that should have gone into transit fares rather than their pockets. Will the minister confirm today that he will roll back those inflated wages? Hon. K. Falcon: I guess I'm left wondering if indeed the writers across the way really are on strike, because I got this question last time. Anyhow, I'm happy to answer it again for the benefit of the members opposite. The members will know that a special committee chaired by former New Democratic Premier Mike Harcourt made a recommendation to the TransLink board â the new professional board â to receive compensation based upon what similar authorities like the Vancouver Airport Authority or the Fraser Port Authority would be earning. I get that it's a lot of money for average folks, but we're asking them to be responsible for their part in implementing the largest transit investment package in the history of the province. Mr. Speaker: The member has a supplemental. M. Karagianis: Currently in British Columbia we have the highest transit fares in the country â $10 for a rider to go from Surrey to downtown and back. That is more than a lot of people earn on the minimum wage in this province today. This government has sanctioned their ...

Since The Tyee is lobbing into the breech of public discourse "#bcwantsaplan"... this seemed like the best possible reply during a 'Cabinet Lobbying Week' (1). Thank you to the Hon. Mary Polak, MLA for her glorious sortie stating very clearly the BCLiberal poverty reduction plan. Of course since "Rockette Polak" is a fan of James Bond movies, her unofficial anthem of "Nobody Does It Better" plays in the background. I also decided to edit out most of the BCNDP ranting & raving to get to the point (and because I don't really care for it). ---FOOTNOTE--- (1) As Premier-Designate(-Targets) Christy Clark picks a new cabinet on Monday, let's keep the Honourable Mary Polak Honourable!

Catastrophe was narrowly averted in my community the afternoon of Friday, January 23rd. The call came in that fire had broken out inside historic Craigflower Manor, the third oldest surviving building in the entire province. The two-storey log home is one of the last remaining links to original settlement farms established by the Hudsons Bay Company in the 1850s. Greeted with a fireball when they kicked in the back door, fire crews worked quickly to prevent the flames from entering the walls, where the fire certainly would have spread upwards and engulfed the entire house. They contained the flames to a hallway and kitchen on the bottom floor, saving priceless and irreplaceable artifacts just metres away. Those firefighters saved the 156-year-old landmark at the corner of Admirals and Craigflower roads. My community is grateful to View Royal Fire Rescue and the mutual aid support provided by Esquimalt Fire Rescue and Colwood Fire and Rescue Services. The fire is a wake-up call that says action is needed to protect Craigflower Manor. One of the factors that has already emerged in the investigation is that this priceless heritage building doesnt have an adequate alarm system. Fire investigators say that a smoke-sensitive alarm system would signal trouble earlier. Ive asked the minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts to pay for this urgently needed system. In the meantime, my community is coming together to raise the $200000 or so that will be needed to repair the damage ...
