The New Democratic Party ( ), commonly referred to as the NDP, is a social-democratic federal political party in Canada. The party is regarded as falling on the Centre-left in the Canadian political spectrum. The interim leader of the NDP is Nycole Turmel who was appointed to the position due to the illness of Jack Layton, who died on August 22, 2011. The provincial NDP parties in Manitoba and Nova Scotia currently form the government in those provinces. Provincial parties have previously formed governments in British Columbia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, and the territorial party formed the government in Yukon. In May 2011, for the first time in the party's history, the NDP gained the title of Official Opposition in the Canadian House of Commons due to the party's runner-up finish in the 2011 federal election.
