Julius Caesar (Timothy Dalton) arrives in Alexandria to collect the debt Egypt owes Rome and ends up sorting out the rightful heir to the throne. Cleopatra (Leonor Varela), crowned Queen of Egypt by her late father before his death, seems to be the obvious choice . . . This 1999 Hallmark made-for-TV movie was beautifully directed and stunningly photographed. Timothy Dalton (who still could have been playing Bond) as the great Julius Caesar, Billy Zane (of Titantic fame) as Marc Antony, and Leonor Varela (young, beautiful and refreshing) as Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Egypt, breathe life into the historical figures who take over your imagination and heart for the length of this film, which is much more stirring, IMHO, than the Taylor/Burton Hollywood movie. I think Zane and Varela were supposed to be the 'hot' love story here as they are closer in age, but Dalton and Varela's chemistry practically burns a whole in the screen at times and far surpasses the Cleopatra/Antony scenes. I am including only the first half of the movie here: Caesar and Cleopatra's love story. The ending scenes are really striking, but you'll just have to go out and purchase the DVD to see them . . . No copyright infringement intended -- for fan enjoyment only.

Cleopatra lets Caesar leave for Rome without telling him she is carrying his child. Ptolemy Caesar (Caesarion) is born and Cleopatra takes him with her to Rome. Caesar and Cleopatra are reunited and Caesar meets his son. Rome is not kind to Cleopatra. She forces Caesar to publicly claim Caesarion. Afterwards, he confesses to her that he would lose everything rather than lose her ((sob!)). LOL This 1999 Hallmark made-for-TV movie was beautifully directed and stunningly photographed.
