The Iceland national football team is the national football team of Iceland and is controlled by the Football Association of Iceland. It has never advanced to the finals of any major international competition.

For the Euro 2004, Iceland were led by Ásgeir Sigurvinsson topping the group table for a while, with 4 wins and even held Germany to a 0 0 draw in Reykjavík, however both Germany and Scotland had a game in hand to them and both used them to their maximum potential, with Scotland beating Lithuania and Germany beat Scotland in Germany's penultimate game. Iceland failed to grind a result in their final game against Germany, and Scotland pipped them to a play-off place. Iceland have failed to match this since, finishing on just 4 points for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and 8 points from their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Iceland were knocked out in the quarter finals of the 2001 Millennium Super Cup to a Chilean Football League XI, this was following a 3 0 victory over hosts India.

Perhaps the most notable match was a friendly against Estonia on 24 April 1996 in Tallinn. During the second half of this match, Eiður Guðjohnsen entered as a substitute for his father Arnór. This marked the first time that a father and son played in the same international match. Another landmark for Icelandic football was the 2 0 upset victory over Italy in a friendly at Laugardalsvöllur, 18 August 2004 with 20,204 fans in attendance, an Icelandic record.

Chamberlain grabs a hat-trick to inspire England win. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain inspired England to a comfortable 3-0 victory in Iceland with a well-taken hat-trick in Reykjavik to put Stuart Pearce's team top of Euro 2013 Qualifying Group 8. The Arsenal winger was a handful all night and a quick-fire brace inside 15 minutes put England in charge in what could have been a very tricky encounter. He added a fortuitous third just after half-time and cap a fine man-of-the-match performance in what was his fourth game for the Under-21s. It was a chilly night at Laugardalsvollur, Iceland's national stadium, but a healthy, if not noisy, crowd turned out in numbers. However, they had to see their team concede two early goals. The opener came following some good work on the half-way line from Watford striker Marvin Sordell. He turned well before being tripped, but the French referee allowed play to go on and the ball rolled into the path of the Arsenal winger. Chamberlain sprinted forward making his way into the area before tucking away past Arnar Petursson. It was his first goal for Pearce's team. And two minutes later he made it two, this time profiting from a lapse by the Iceland stopper. Nathan Delfouneso sent in an in-swinging cross from the left which looked easy for Petursson, but it slipped out of his grasp and fell kindly for Chamberlain who side-footed home. Unfortunately it was to be Delfouneso's last action of the game as midway through the half, after attempting a back ...

TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary of Iran's Football Federation announced that the Iranian national squad will play a friendly match against Iceland. TEHRAN, Iran achieved a well deserved 1-0 victory over Iceland in a friendly match in Tehran, Tuesday evening. The goal of the day came courtesy of 19-year-old substitute striker Karim Ansarifard, nine minutes into second half. Afshin Ghotbi had to do without the Osasuna-duo Javad Nekounam and Masoud Shojaei and the injured Iman Mobali, Khosro Heydari and Amir Mohebi. Iceland came to Iran's capital without some key players, but yet fielded a strong squad with several foreign based players. In an almost empty Azadi stadium, the hosts were the clearly better and more creative side from the beginning and had several opportunities to break the deadlock. Khalatbari did well to break through Iceland's left defensive side and set up returnee Farhad Majidi inside the area seven minutes into the game, but the veteran failed to convert. The 32-year-old Esteghlal Tehran striker was the most eye-catching offensive player in the opening minutes of the game, but was let down by his finishing again just short time later, when he got to a Pejman Nouri cross but failed to trouble goalkeeper with his weak shot.
