The UEFA European Football Championship is the main football competition of the men's national football teams governed by UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations). Held every four years since 1960, in the even-numbered year between World Cup tournaments, it was originally called the UEFA European Nations Cup, changing to the current name in 1968. Starting with the 1996 tournament, specific championships are often referred to in the form "Euro 2008" or whichever year is appropriate.

Prior to entering the tournament all teams other than the host nations (which qualify automatically) compete in a qualifying process. The championship winners earn the opportunity to compete in the following FIFA Confederations Cup, but are not obliged to do so.

FATV Match Highlights - A Jermain Defoe hat-trick and first goal for Adam Johnson see off Bulgaria. England made the perfect start to their European Championship qualification campaign on Friday evening, when a Jerman Defoe hat-trick and an Adam Johnson strike proved enough to see off a stubborn Bulgaria team at Wembley. They got off to the perfect start and were ahead within three minutes. Wayne Rooney was the architect as he cleverly reversed a chip into the path of the onrushing Ashley Cole in the box. Bulgarian 'keeper Nikolay Mihaylov was out quickly to half-block his initial effort, but Cole quickly reacted to the loose ball and picked out Defoe in the six yard box and he made no mistake by emphatically smashing home into the roof of the net. On 61 minutes, just seconds after Joe Hart had saved well from Dimitar Rangelov, England produced a devastating counter-attack which ended with Defoe rifling home Rooney's pass to put England two up, having earlier given Fabio Capello's side the lead in the third minute. Manchester City's Adam Johnson, on as a substitute for Theo Walcott, ended any slim hopes of a Bulgarian revival with England's third and his first for his country before Defoe completed his treble with a powerful drive four minutes from time. "When you play with a partner up front it takes time to gel but Wayne Rooney is a great player and if I make the runs I know he'll find me," said Defoe, after the game. "People know what I'm good at. I'll always try to ...

Saravakos joined Panathinaikos in 1984 from Panionios and became, maybe, the best attacking midfielder in greek football history. He won 5 championships, 6 cups and scored 200 goals in 373 appearances. He helped Panathinaikos to reach the last 4 in Champions Cup (later it was renamed champions league) in 1985 and 3 years later the last 8 in UEFA cup.So he became well known in European football and in early 90's Juventus offered him a well paid contract but the transfer never completed because the president of the club rejected the offer. In 1994 moved to AEK Athens and lead his new club in champions league group stage for first time in their history. In 1997 returned back to Panathinaikos where he was ending his carrier one year later.
