BBC News (also called BBC News Channel) is the BBC's 24-hour rolling news television network in the United Kingdom. The channel launched as BBC News 24 on 9 November 1997 at 17:30 as part of the BBC's foray into digital domestic television channels, becoming the first competitor to Sky News, which had been running since 1989. Since then, with several relaunches, an increase in funding and resources from the BBC and improvements in digital television technology, the channel has been able to diversify content, with two minute looped bulletins available to view via BBC Red Button, BBC News Online and the BBC's mobile website, alongside individual weather and sport bulletins.

In May 2007 the channel became available for UK viewers to view through the BBC News website through a live stream. In April 2008 the channel was renamed "BBC News" as part of a £550,000 rebranding of the BBC's news output, complete with a new studio and presentation. Its sister services, BBC World was also renamed as "BBC World News" while the national news bulletins became BBC News at One, BBC News at Six and BBC News at Ten.

As a major part of the BBC News department, the channel is based at and broadcast from the News Centre within BBC Television Centre in West London. The channel was named RTS News Channel of the Year in 2006 and again in 2009.

In Britain, Channel Four covered the news by airing a video of a clash between rioters and Basij members in which a man was seen shooting at the crowd. According to comments broadcast in a video provided by the government in Tehran, journalist Maziar Bahari had provided Channel Four with the footage of the June 15 attack. What was aired by the channel, however, had the scene of the attack on the base censored. The new footage obtained by Press TV shows a group of people attacking the Basij base with Molotov cocktails. The building in question has been deemed as a vital structure and has been confirmed by Tehran officials as an armory. Press TV has broadcast newly-obtained footage of a controversial clash between Basij members and protesters, which shows the Basij base under siege. Tehran became the scene of violence in recent weeks amidst rallies staged in protest at the outcome of the June 12 presidential election -- which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-elected to a second term in office. People described by Iranian officials as "saboteurs" infiltrated the riots and set fire to a mosque, two gas stations and a military post in western Tehran. At least 20 people were killed and many others were injured in the ensuing violence. The protests came to worldwide attention when major media outlets broadcast footage of what they described as unprovoked attacks by security forces. www.presstv.ir

Taliban denies Pakistan blasts Posted: 12 June 2011 1347 hrs PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Pakistan's Taliban on Sunday denied responsibility for twin bomb blasts that ripped through a crowded market in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing 35 people and injuring dozens. The attack, one of the deadliest to hit Pakistan since US Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in May, devastated the Khyber Super Market district which includes a hotel, shops and student accommodation. A small initial blast at around 11.30 pm local time Saturday drew onlookers and emergency services before a second more powerful blast, believed to be from a suicide strike, detonated and was heard for miles around. "At least 35 people were killed and more than 80 injured in the blasts," senior local police official Ijaz Khan told AFP, saying the explosions were just four minutes apart. "The first blast was quite small but as people gathered close to the site of the explosion, the second one, which was real big one, went off." Those killed included two journalists working for English-language newspapers Pakistan Today and The News. The Pakistani Taliban, who have vowed to carry out attacks to avenge the killing of Osama, denied any role in the bombing and said they target only the government and military. "We did not carry out this attack in Peshawar. It is an attempt by foreign secret agencies who are doing it to malign us," Tehreek-e-Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP on phone. "We do not target ...
