Needham Market is a town in Suffolk, England. It initially grew around the wool combing industry, until the onset of the plague, which swept the town from 1663 to 1665. To prevent the spread of the disease, the town was chained at either end, which succeeded in its task but at the cost of two-thirds of the populace. The town did not recover for nearly two hundred years, with the canalisation of the River Gipping in the late 18th Century and the introduction of the railway. Modern Needham Market contains two road names that are linked to the plague. Chainhouse Road, named after the chains that ran across the East end of the town. The Causeway, is a modern variation of 'the corpseway' so called because of the route that plague victims were transported out of town, to neighbouring Barking church for interment.

Notable buildings in the town include; the 15th century parish church, originally a chapel of ease for the parish of Barking (with a unique double-hammerbeam roof), the mediaeval Limes Hotel, and the Stuart era school. Needham Lake (a former gravel pit) provides leisure facilities and a wildlife habitat.

The East Anglia Main Line railway runs through the town, with Needham Market railway station providing trains to Ipswich, Cambridge and Peterborough. The A14 (although then the A45) once ran directly through Needham Market, but a bypass was built in the 1970s. This has left the town with good road links to the surrounding area, but with less traffic than before.

Notable people from Needham include Joseph Priestley who discovered oxygen, EastEnders actress June Brown. The author George Ewart Evans lived in Needham Market. The Liberal Democrat peer Ros Scott chose her title after the town.

The town of Needham, Massachusetts was named after Needham Market.

The local football team, Needham Market F.C., has been very successful over recent years after reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase.

A waterlogged pitch at Kellemargh Park meant that the tie was switched to the ground of Squires Gate FC. With the score at 1-1 it looked as though the two rivals would once again be heading toward extra time when the referee awarded a penalty to the visitors. This video shows the penalty converted and Needham Market FC hung on and went though to the last eight of the competition.

Welcome onboard the 11:42 Intercity Service from Ipswich to Norwich (10:30 from London Liverpool St) which is the train I travelled on to Norwich. The train is one of National Express' Mk3 locomotive hauled sets which comprised of DVT Class 82 136 + 9 Mk3's + Class 90 003 (Raedwald of East Anglia). The section from Ipswich to Norwich is 47 miles long and serves Needham Market, Stowmarket, Diss before reaching Norwich. Here is a description of the trip. Upon departure from Ipswich we run alongside the Container sidings before we pass East Suffolk Junction where the East Suffolk Line branches off the Great Eastern Main Line. As we leave the centre of Ipswich we pass through Claydon with its level crossing and business buildings marking the site of this station which closed in 1963. Nearby there will be a new station at Great Blackenham to serve the brand new SnowOasis Sports Centre. A short while later we pass Needham Market Station which was closed in 1967 before being reopened in 1971. It is served by the Ipswich - Cambridge services. Just beyond Needham Market is Stowmarket which is another interchange. The Cambridge and Peterborough services branch off the main line at Haughley Junction which also has a level crossing that marks the site of the former Haughley Station. Beyond Haughley we pass the villiages of Finningham and Mellis which are also former stations. Mellis had a branch line to Eye which was 2 miles long and ran through Yaxley. Passenger trains ceased in ...

A top of the table clash between Needham Market & Grays Athletic, at the end of November 2011. Two very strong sides from the Ryman North. Their results were identical with Needham only being top on goal difference - but what a goal difference! A lot of their games had been won by four goal margins and a couple of times had scored seven goals in a match. Grays for their part were playing some really attractive football, but unlike Needham have struggled to put the ball in the net, most of their victories had been by the odd goal but occasionally have managed to put four goals past some opponents, consistency was the problem...
