Aldeburgh ( ) is a coastal town in Suffolk, East Anglia, England. Located on the River Alde, the town is notable for its Blue Flag shingle beach and fisherman huts where freshly caught fish are sold daily, and the Aldeburgh Yacht Club. The internationally renowned Aldeburgh Festival of arts, which takes place at nearby Snape Maltings, was created in 1948 by the resident and acclaimed composer Benjamin Britten.

A popular weekend destination, particular attractions are the ancient Moot Hall (where the town council still meets), Napoleonic-era Martello tower to the south, sheltered yachting marina at Slaughden, and two family run shops serving fish and chips, one of which is often cited as among the best fish and chip shops in the UK.

A train journey on the now closed railway line from Saxmundham to Aldeburgh. At 45 seconds you can make out the house in the clouds and windmill at Thorpeness before the trains comes into "Thorpe Halt" station for Thorpeness.Part of the line is now a walk. The Station at Aldeburgh was next to the Railway Tavern on the roundabout into Albeburgh. It was built using the white Aldeburgh brick. On its demolition some of these bricks were reused on extending existing buildings in Aldeburgh(to meet conservation area requirements). The song is "Slow train" by Flanders and Swann, a lament to the closure of the railways under Dr Beeching. Interesting observation. Not a single car parked in Park Lane! The car is a Morris Oxford Traveller en.wikipedia.org It should also be noted that the daughter of Newson Garrett a weathly local business( & himself grandson of Richard Garrett of Leiston) after much resistance became the first female doctor in the UK. Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson founded the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital in London, and the new wing at Ipswich Hospital is named after her. She also become the first female mayor in the UK

'Daughter' is one of Peter Blegvad's best known songs which was covered by Loudon Wainwright III after he toured with Peter in the 1990s. This version is taken from the 'Choices Under Pressure' album. Peter will be making a rare solo and acoustic appearance at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival in Suffolk on Saturday 7 November (5.45-6.30pm) - box office 01728 687110. Perhaps best known for his Independent on Sunday comic strip 'Leviathan', Peter is The Poetry Trust's illustrator for 2009 (he's been supplying the visuals for our Festival programme booklet and Poetry Paper) - hence his appearance at The Aldeburgh Poetry Festival this autumn. He'll also be taking part in talks and discussions. More details at www.thepoetrytrust.org.

On Saturday we took a short drive to the pretty Suffolk coastal town of Aldeburgh. The following is from Wikipedia. Aldeburgh is a town in Suffolk, East Anglia, England; it is located on the Alde river at 52° 9' North, 1° 36' East. Its name, Alde Burgh means "old fort" although this, along with much of the Tudor town, has now been lost to the sea. In the 16th century, Aldeburgh was a leading port, and had a flourishing ship-building industry. Sir Francis Drake's ships Greyhound and Pelican (later renamed Golden Hind) were both built in Aldeburgh. The flag ship of the Virginia Company, the Sea Venture is believed to have been built there in 1608. When the River Alde silted up and was unable to accommodate larger ships, the area went into decline. Aldeburgh survived principally as a fishing village until the nineteenth century, when it became popular as a seaside resort. Much of its distinctive and whimsical architecture derives from this period. The river is now home to a flourishing yacht club. The Aldeburgh Moot Hall is a timber-framed building which has been used for council meetings for over 400 years. It also houses the local museum. The poet George Crabbe was born in Aldeburgh in 1754 and the town forms a loose basis for his poems The Village' and The Borough. Outside the town, the Snape Maltings is the venue for a well-known classical music festival every June. The Aldeburgh Festival was founded in 1948 by Benjamin Britten, Eric Crozier, and Peter Pears.
