Macquarie Island (or Macca) lies in the southwest corner of the Pacific Ocean, about half-way between New Zealand and Antarctica, at 54°30S, 158°57E. Politically, it has formed part of the Australian state of Tasmania since 1900 and became a Tasmanian State Reserve in 1978. In 1997 it became a world heritage site. It was a part of Esperance Municipality until 1993, when the municipality was merged with other municipalities to Huon Valley. Ecologically, it is part of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion.

Since 1948 the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has maintained a permanent base, the Macquarie Island Station, on the isthmus at the northern end of the island at the foot of Wireless Hill. The population of the base, the island's only human inhabitants, usually varies from 20 to 40 people over the year.

This footage was shot around Macquarie Island (Garden Cove, Hurd Pt & Gadget's Gully) on Hi8 by Rick Besso. The Royal Penguins look a bit worse for wear because they are moulting. Edited and uploaded by Hullwarren.

Here's another one for the "Oops!" file. Macquarie Island was discovered by humans early in the 19th century, and was soon seeing a brisk traffic in sealers who brought more than just hunting supplies to the small island southeast of Australia. The introduction of rats and mice (inadvertently brought to the island on sealers' ships), cats (meant to control the population of rats and mice, of course), and rabbits (tasty victuals for the intrepid sealers) has virtually destroyed the island's ecosystem and caused the population of native seabirds to dwindle. A study conducted by scientists from the Australian Antarctic Division and released earlier this month confirms that the most recent attempts to protect what is left of the natural flora and fauna have actually succeeded in creating conditions under which seabirds continue to die. Arko Lucieer, geologist at the University of Tasmania and co-author of the study, explains the situation to GOOD News.

This video was shot on Hi8 at the Lusitania Bay king penguin rookery on Macquarie Island by Rick Besso (he is narrating it in the background). This is one of the largest penguin rookeries in the world. The only thing this footage doesn't convey is the smell - you can often smell the place before you actually hear it. Macquarie Harbour, western Tasmania, is the location for the penal settlement of Sarah Island where they were premier ship builders. Take a Gordon River cruise and see for yourself!

This video was shot around Macquarie Island on Hi8 by Rick Besso (he has narrated parts of it). At the start is the first pup born on the Isthmus in the 96/97 season. The big ones with the nose are the boys and the small ones are the girls - you can see a girl getting the friendly flipper (she doesn't get to have a headache either!). There is a good shot of an ele seal snoozing after a close encounter with a great white shark near the end too. Edited and uploaded by Hullwarren.
