The many diverse fishing habitats that make up the Top End of the Northern Territory make it a truly world class fishing destination. Lush billabongs, tidal rivers, mangrove-lined estuaries, a scattering of islands and hundreds of kilometres of unspoilt coastline comprising pristine coastal waters are teeming with a wide variety of fish, so there is something to suit everyones taste. Darwin Harbour is full of exotic fish but those seeking real adventure can head into Arnhem Land, over to the Tiwi Islands, down to the Victoria or Daly rivers in the Katherine region or into the Gulf region for a truly unforgettable fishing expedition. The barramundi is best known as one of the worlds greatest sport fish and is abundant in Northern Territory waterways, some up to 130 centimetres in length. Huge, wide rivers like the Daly and Victoria are prime barra haunts, as are the networks of beautiful waterways found in World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park and the Mary River area. Fishing in the Top End is excellent all year round and while barramundi are most active from March to May, anglers can fish successfully at any time for a range of species. The Top End is home to an array of other great sport and reef fish, including giant trevally, queenfish, Spanish mackerel, cobia, black jewfish, golden snapper, red emperor, coral trout and marlin and sailfish. You can hire a boat or bring your own, take a fully-guided fishing safari, stay at a remote fishing lodge in Arnhem Land or ...

Jabiru, Brolga, Gouldian Finch, Red Goshawk, Rainbow Pitta and Purple-crowned Fairy Wren all thrive in the wetlands, savannah plains and escarpments of Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. More than 250 bird species call this World Heritage-listed park home, but seeing these feathered beauties in their natural habitat can take patience and some knowledge of their behaviour. It's all worth it though, when you see thousands of Magpie Geese thunder out of their placid billabong or strutting Brolgas at their most elegant. Or view nature at its most primal as an Egret plucks a fish from a murky waterhole, holds it in its jaws to savour the moment, and then swallows it whole.
