East Berlin was the name given to the eastern part of Berlin between 1949 and 1990. It consisted of the Soviet sector of Berlin that was established in 1945. The American, British and French sectors became West Berlin, a part strongly associated with West Germany but a free city. Despite its status as part of an occupied city, East Berlin was claimed as the capital of East Germany, as the Soviets did not honor the distinction of a free city for their sector. From 13 August 1961 until 9 November 1989 East Berlin was separated from West Berlin by the Berlin Wall. The East German government referred to East Berlin simply as "Berlin" or often "Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR" (Berlin, capital of the GDR). The term "Democratic Sector" was also used until the 1960s. (See also Naming conventions).

The Wall (1962) / Berlin Wall Documentary Film Video. Creative Commons license: Public Domain. Government film about the erection of the Berlin Wall. From the holdings of the National Archives.Sponsor: United States Information Agency. The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a physical barrier separating West Berlin from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) (East Germany), including East Berlin. The longer inner German border demarcated the border between East and West Germany. Both borders came to symbolize the Iron Curtain between Western and Eastern Europe and, ultimately, between USA and the Soviet Union. The wall separated East Germany from West Germany for more than a quarter-century, from the day construction began on August 13, 1961 until the Wall was opened on November 9, 1989. During this period, at least 136 people were confirmed killed trying to cross the Wall into West Berlin, according to official figures. However, a prominent victims' group claims that more than 200 people were killed trying to flee from East to West Berlin. The East German government issued shooting orders to border guards dealing with defectors; such orders are not the same as shoot to kill orders which GDR officials denied ever issuing. When the East German government announced on November 9, 1989, after several weeks of civil unrest, that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin, crowds of East Germans climbed onto and crossed the wall, joined by West Germans on ...

What would the 60th anniversary celebrations look like if East Germany were still around today? Some vids and pics of marches and celebrations from the GDR. (Thanks and appreciation to the user "Die-Linke" on Flickr who designed the posters you see at the start of the vid (the one at the end was made by me!)). Music is from a CD of German marches played by the Orchester des Wachregiments Feliks Dzierzynski Berlin, except the 'Internationale' at the end which is taken from the 'Festival Overture 1948' conducted by Horst Stein. This video highlights the areas of Berlin that were formally part of East Berlin. My goal was to contrast these areas as they were under the DDR and show them as they appear today, showing how Berlin under a unified Germany has prospered and grown. The video is in two parts (pre- and post-unification) and features two different versions of the old DDR national anthem to contrast the feelings of the two eras. But, wanting to use all my own photos and videos I was faced with a small problem: I had never been to East Berlin during the time of the DDR. What to do? My only option was to use my own photos and video of areas of the old East Berlin and "backdate" them so they appear they were taken before 1989. The photos were made to look like old black and white photos from perhaps the 70s or 80's, and I did some extensive Photoshop work on a few of them to remove things like graffiti and billboards, which would not have been present. The Karl Marx bust statue at Strausberger Platz was a missing the "K" when I took the picture in April 2006, so I Photoshopped a replacement. The video was put through several filters in Final Cut Pro to look like color shifted, scratched old 8MM film, rather than digital video shot in 2005 and 2006. The only images in the video that are not my own creations are the photos in the opening sequence, which are from some old DDR era postcards that I have, as well as some other elements which are items I have purchased at Berlin flea markets. The ...
