North Rhine-Westphalia ( -deˈnɔɐ̯tʁaɪn vɛstˈfaːlənDe-Nordrhein-Westfalen is the westernmost, most populous, and economically most powerful state of Germany. The state was a merger of the north part of the Rhineland, Westphalia and Lippe. The state is currently ran by a Red-green alliance with the Social Democrats as the senior coalition party and The Greens as the junior coalition partner. The Christian Democrats won the most votes at the last election.

Im Jahr 1887 schied Hagen verwaltungsrechtlich aus dem Kreis Hagen aus und wurde eine kreisfreie Stadt. Der Bankier und Mäzen Karl Ernst Osthaus holte in den Jahren nach der Jahrhundertwende viele später bedeutende Architekten (ua Henry van de Velde, Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius) und Künstler in die Stadt, welche den Ruf von Hagen als Bindeglied zwischen Jugendstil und Moderne (âHagener Impuls) begründeten.
