Quneitra (also Al Qunaytirah, Qunaitira, or Kuneitra; ) is the largely destroyed and abandoned capital of the Quneitra Governorate in south-western Syria. It is situated in a high valley in the Golan Heights at an elevation of 1,010 metres (3,313 feet) above sea level. Quneitra was founded in the Ottoman era as a way station on the caravan route to Damascus and subsequently became a garrison town of some 20,000 people, strategically located near the ceasefire line with Israel. Its name is Arabic for "the little bridge".

On 10 June 1967, the last day of the Six-Day War, Quneitra came under Israeli control. It was briefly recaptured by Syria during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, but Israel regained control in its subsequent counter-offensive. The city was almost completely destroyed before the Israeli withdrawal in June 1974. It now lies in the demilitarized United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Zone between Syria and Israel, a short distance from the de facto border between the two countries, and is populated by only a handful of families. Syria refused to rebuild the city and actively discourages resettlement in the area. Israel was heavily criticized by the United Nations for the city's destruction, while Israel has also criticized Syria for not rebuilding Quneitra.

Quneitra was once a bustling town in the Golan Heights and southwestern Syria's administrative capital with a population of 37000. The word 'Quneitra' derives from Qantara, or 'bridge', between Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. Known for its abundant water resources, it has been continuously inhabited since the Stone Age. Over the millennia, many peoples, including Arameans, Assyrians, Caldeans, Persians, Greeks, and Arabs have occupied it. In 1967, during the six-day war, Israel captured Quneitra. It then became a site of many battles but, except for a brief interlude, remained in Israeli hands until 1974, when a UN-brokered agreement led to an Israeli pullback. Before withdrawing, however, Quneitra was evacuated and systematically destroyed by the Israeli army (based on eyewitness accounts; UN General Assembly resolution 3240 in 1974 condemned Israel's role in its destruction. Israel disputes this account). Many prominent Western reporters, agreeing with the UN and Syrian version of events, saw this as nothing short of an act of wanton brutality â a whole town methodically ransacked, dynamited, and bulldozed. Quneitra lies undisturbed ever since, a ghost town riddled with land mines, an open-air museum of Middle-Eastern wars (Syria now shows it off as proof of Israeli malice). Church domes and minarets, blackened and broken, rise above the wasteland. Do these sights, I wondered, ever infuriate native sons into seeking compensation in kind? Behind the town, a barbed ...

This is Happy Flowers with 'Colors In The Rain' from the 1986 Touch And Go Records Compilation LP 'God's Favourite Dog'. Bio : The musical group, Happy Flowers, was formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, in 1983 by two former members of the Landlords, John Beers ("Mr. Horribly Charred Infant") and Charlie Kramer ("Mr. Anus"). This duo combines improvisational noise punk guitar and drums with lyrics often written in the first person from the perspective of a child, with childlike intonation and grammar. Their humorous songs are mainly about freak childhood accidents and common childhood gripes. Happy Flowers' first song, "Mom, I Gave the Cat Some Acid", was released during the summer of 1984 as a part of the compilation album called Brain of Stone. The band's audience grew in 1987 with the release of the album, I Crush Bozo. In March of 2000, the band went on a four-date tour, the band's first tour in nearly ten years. In March of 2006, the band reunited again and played at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. members.aol.com www.myspace.com Cassilis, Victoria (Australia) en.wikipedia.org Deception Island, South Shetland Islands en.wikipedia.org Hashima Island, Japan en.wikipedia.org Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works, Chile en.wikipedia.org Prypiat, Ukraine en.wikipedia.org Pyramiden, Svalbard, Norway en.wikipedia.org Quneitra, Syria en.wikipedia.org San Zhi, Taiwan blog.miragestudio7.com For lots of photos of ghost towns and other ...

Part of a presentation for the production Juyoub Mansiyeh (Forgotten) being developed by award winning director Sawsan Darwaza, produced by Nadine Toukan, Pioneers Production Company, Jordan 2007. Socio-political impact changes landscapes and people's lifestyles, livelihoods and lineage. In a world full of bad news which draws attention mainly if it plays like an action movie, this film aims to give voice to people and place in neglected situations, socially, politically, or both. Our objective is to boldly present stories that help ensure these places and their peoples are no longer forgotten. The action starts now. Although this project is still in development, we aim to fully harness the power of online community activism to begin voicing out to the world some of the forgotten we are slowly finding. This is the story of Quneitra as told by Abu Zuhdi in April 2004 while Sawsan and her crew where on a research trip. Juyoub Mansiyeh is intended to be an evolving online documentary.
