The Luxembourg Army is the national military of Luxembourg. Luxembourg has no navy, as the country is landlocked, or air force, although it does have aircraft. The Luxembourg Army was integrated into the Force Publique (Public Force) which included the Gendarmerie and the Police. The Gendarmerie was merged into the Grand Ducal Police in 2000. The army has been an all-volunteer force since 1967. It has a current strength of approximately 450 professional soldiers, 340 enlisted recruits and 100 civilians, and a total budget of $369 million, or 0.9% of GDP.

The army is under civilian control. The Commander-in-Chief is the Grand Duke. The professional head of the army is the Chief of Defence, currently Gaston Reinig. He answers to the civil Minister for Defence in the civilian government, currently Jean-Marie Halsdorf, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration. The Grand Duke and the Chief of Defence are the only generals, with colonels as Deputy Chief of Defence and head of the Military Training Centre.

Luxembourg has participated in the Eurocorps since 1994, has contributed troops to the UNPROFOR and IFOR missions in former Yugoslavia, and participates with a small contingent in the current NATO SFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Luxembourg army is integrated into the Multinational Beluga Force under Belgian command. Luxembourg troops have also deployed to Afghanistan to support ISAF. Luxembourg has financially supported international peacekeeping missions during the 1991 Gulf War, in Rwanda and, more recently, Albania. The army also has participated in humanitarian relief missions such as setting up refugee camps for Kurds and providing emergency supplies to Albania.

Robert Davis, of Newbern, Tenn. is a veteran of World War II. He attended Dyersburg's Veterans Day celebration with his brother, Melvin, who is a Korean War veteran. Robert Davis was with the United States Army's 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division during the World War II. He spoke of a close shave when he was almost shot by one of Gen. Patton's tankers. His company commander left him at a road junction and a squad of tanks came upon him. A lieutenant stopped his tank and took Davis' gun from him thinking he was a German in an American uniform. Davis said it was maybe because of his accent. He asked if someone else in the lieutenant's unit was from Tennessee. Another soldier went to get a soldier that was from Tennessee. He returned with that soldier and Davis asked him which county was he from. The soldier replied, "Dyer County". "I said oh 'Thank God'," said Davis. He continued to asked him if he knew Judge Anderson Baker; Martin Jacobs, the game warden; Ronnie Miller, the pawn shop owner or Nick Bond, a policeman. The soldier also knew the same people and confirmed Douglas' citizenship. The lieutenant told Davis that his company commander almost got him in deep trouble because two men were only supposed to be at the road junctions. Davis also did guard duty in Luxembourg and spoke briefly to Hermann Goering, Hitler's second in demand. He said soldiers were guarding Goering inside a hotel and Goering was coming up the stairs as he was coming down. Davis said ...

The Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, 50.5 acres in extent, is situated in a beautiful wooded area. The cemetery was established on December 29, 1944 by the 609th Quartermaster Company of the US Third Army while Allied Forces were stemming the enemy's desperate Ardennes Offensive, one of the critical battles of World War II. The city of Luxembourg served as headquarters for General George S. Patton's US Third Army. General Patton is buried here. Sloping gently downhill from the memorial is the burial area containing 5076 of our military dead, many of whom lost their lives in the "Battle of the Bulge" and in the advance to the Rhine. Their headstones follow graceful curves; trees, fountains and flower beds contribute to the dignity of the ensemble. Feel free to take also a look here: www.abmc.gov

Attached are some pictures of the advertisement for the Prague Campaign on a couple of the trams. We have several of these, they started this week and run for 3 weeks. Even has a website to be able to contact the Church. This are very similar to the ones we will be handing out on the street with the John & Romans starting Monday. We have 34 people leaving from Chicago, that are more than anxious to get out on the streets and go to work. Again we are asking prayer for the next 2 weeks, but especially for the Evangelistic Service on Wed. 8-22-2010.
