Susan Garrett is a Democratic member of the Illinois Senate, representing the 29th District since 2003. The district includes all or parts of Bannockburn, Deerfield, Des Plaines, Fort Sheridan, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Highwood, Knollwood, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights and Riverwoods. Prior to that she was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 59th District for four years.

Among many notable legislative accomplishments, Senator Garrett drafted legislation that gave college media the right to function without approval from the administration and made student editors responsible for content.

"There shouldn't be a distinction between college journalists and urban newspaper journalists," Garrett said in explanation of her support for the bill. "Nobody should have the right to pull back on what journalists are trying to put out there."

Garrett lives in Lake Forest with her husband, Scott. They have two adult children, Brett and Elizabeth. Garrett received her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Lake Forest College.
