Lord Howe Island ( , or /ˈhæɔ/ in Australian English phonology) is a small crescent-shaped volcanic island in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand 600 km (372.8 mi) directly east of the Australian mainland, about 700 km north-east of Sydney, and about 900 km from Norfolk Island to th-east. The island is about 11 km long and and between 2.8 km and 0.6 km wide with an area of about 16.56 sq km wide with a sheltered internal coral reef lagoon, and a landscape dominated in the north and south by high ground of relatively untouched forest, in the south dominated by two volcanic mountains Mount Lidgbird (777 m) and Mount Gower (875 m), the highest point of the island. In the north, where most of the population live, there is Malabar (209 m) and Mount Eliza (147 m). Between these two uplands is and area of lowland which carries some farming, the airstrip, and most of the housing. To the north of the island is the Admiralty Group, a cluster of seven small uninhabited islands. About 23 km to the south-east is the volcanic, uninhabited, sheer and pointed, bird-colonised Balls Pyramid (551 m). The climate is oceanic with cool, evenly wet winters and mild to warm summers with irregular but heavy showers.

The Lord Howe Island Group of islands includes nearby Balls Pyramid, is administered by the Lord Howe Island Board, and is part of the Mid-North Coast Statistical Division of New South Wales, Australia. It is not considered a Local Government Area and is therefore unincorporated (as is the Unincorporated Far West Region), but is self-governed by the Lord Howe Island Board.

Most of the island is untouched forest on rugged terrain. The Lord Howe Island group was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1982 in recognition of its unique beauty and biodiversity. The NSW Lord Howe Island Marine Park and Commonwealth Lord Howe Island Marine Park (commonwealth waters) protect the waters surrounding the island group.

The island's standard time zone is UTC+10:30. During daylight saving time this shifts forward by only half an hour to UTC+11. Commuter airlines are linked to Sydney, Brisbane, Port Macquarie and Norfolk Island.

Lord Howe island is a distinct terrestrial ecoregion, known as the Lord Howe Island subtropical forests. It is part of the Australasia ecozone, and shares many biotic affinities with Australia, New Guinea, and New Caledonia. Lord Howe Island was never part of a continent, and all of its flora and fauna colonized the island from across the sea. Almost half of the island's native plants are endemic. One of the best known is Howea, an endemic genus of palms (Arecaceae) that are commonly known as kentia palms and make handsome houseplants. Several million are exported annually providing the only major industry on the island apart from tourism. Another endemic feature of the island are the Glowing Mushrooms, that can be seen after heavy rain. Found in the Palm forests, they can be picked and last for a number of days glowing. The glow is so bright that you can read by it in the dark. 14 species of seabirds and 18 species of landbirds breed on the island group, including an endemic species, the Lord Howe Woodhen (Gallirallus sylvestris) and 3 endemic subspecies, the Lord Howe Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis contempta), the Lord Howe White-eye (Zosterops lateralis tephropleurus) and the Lord Howe Currawong (Strepera graculina crissalis). A number of endemic bird species and subspecies have become extinct since the arrival of humans on the island.
