The Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner was the first commercial transport aircraft with a pressurized cabin. This feature allowed the plane to cruise at an altitude of 20,000 ft (6,000 m), well above weather disturbances. The pressure differential was 2.5 psi (17 kPa), so at 14,700 ft (4,480 m) the cabin altitude was 8,000 ft (2,440 m). The Model 307 had capacity for a crew of five and 33 passengers. The cabin was nearly 12 ft (3.6 m) across. It was the first land-based aircraft to include a flight engineer as a crew member (several flying boats had included a flight engineer position earlier).

Boeing 307 Video

The Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner was the first fully pressurized airliner to enter service anywhere in the world. Being able to fly 20000 feet higher than the 5000 to 10000 foot-altitude unpressurized airplanes a that time, it was said that it could "fly above the weather." It carried five crew members and 33 passengers and had a nearly 12-foot wide cabin for overnight berths. The Stratoliner was also the first land-based airplane to have a flight engineer as a member of the crew. Boeing's Model 299, prototype for the military bomber aircraft, which duly became the B-17 Flying Fortress, was developed in parallel with a civil version of the same aircraft, which had the company designation Boeing Model 300. The Model 307, or Stratoliner, was a straight-forward conversion from the supremely successful B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. It employed the wings and tail surfaces of the B-17C Flying Fortress. The Boeing 307 was developed to start another era, that of pressurized comfort at higher altitudes than had been previously contemplated. The aircraft was the result of considerable research in high altitude flying by "Tommy" Tomlinson, of TWA, who was estimated to have flown more hours above 30000 feet, than all other pilots combined. With his recommendations, Boeing produced an airliner which could cruise at 14000 feet. The Boeing 307 first flew on December 31, 1938, and TWA put it into service on the transcontinental route on 8 July 1940, reducing the time to 13 hrs. 40 min ...

airboyd.tv Courtesy Prelinger Archives Another home movie film. It appears to be a day out at the airport after World War II ended. There is some good footage of the P-61's and other aircraft of the time including the Waco CG-4A, TWA Boeing 307 and, what I believe to be a Pan American Boeing B-314. NC-18604 "Atlantic Clipper" was in service from 1939-1946.

This is a video of aircraft artifacts at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center. There are two Smithsonian Air and Space museums. This one is located next to Dulles Airport. It's a pain to get to, but once you are there, you'll see it is worth it. This section of the museum has a Boeing 367-80 from 1954; a Concorde from Air France; a gondola from the Goodyear Blimp "Pilgrim"; a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird; a Boeing 307 Stratoliner Clipper Flying Cloud; many helicopters from the 1930s to the Huey to modern day; plenty of World War II aircraft from Americans, Germans and Japanese; missiles, rockets and all kinds of stuff. A must for aviation enthusiasts. (NOTE: The Enola Gay was there and it is in a different video. Go to www.youtube.com )

www.henrytenby.com These wonderful films capture the pioneering age of commercial aviation from the early 1920s until the late 1940s. This was the time when TWA, United Airlines, American Airlines and Lufthansa were just starting operations, and all of these then fledgeling carriers would develop over the following decades into the leader airlines of the 21st century. In June of 1948, the soviets blockaded Berlin, and the United States and Great Britain did not allow Berlin to fall into the hands of the Russians. Through May of 1949, the RAF and USAF maintained an air link whereby everything from coal and trucks, to food and office paper were flown from West Germany into Berlin's three land airports (of Tegel, Tempelhof and Gatow). This DVD features an amazing film showing the allied air efforts in detail. It starts with a visit to the Sunderland flying boat operation that flew goods off the Elb in Hamburg into waterways of Berlin. But this was just a small component of the Berlin Airlift. The landplane operation was massive and every available aircraft was used. Propliner fans will love this DVD as there is really amazing footage of Berlin Airlift aircraft including all the great propliner classics like the Avro York, Halifax, Hastings, Dakota, Tudor, the "Grosse Tudor", Viking, Lancaster and a lot more. To cap it off, the TWA Boeing Stratoliner and DC-3 footage in stunningly glorious kodachrome colour has to be seen to be believed. It is truly amazing that these TWA ...

Southwest Airlines flight 307 (SW307) landing on runway 33 at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California. This is a VERY rare occurrence depending on strong north winds. Good views of KBUR airport field on approach. Aircraft is Boeing 737-700. Seat 16A. After landing there is a very funny PA arrival by the cabin crew.

AMAZING COLOUR footage of one of only FIVE Stratoliners operated by TWA! The world's first airliner to feature a pressurized cabin, the 307 utilised the wings & tail feathers from a B-17, with a completely new fuselage. Only 10 aircraft were ever built, all of them serving originally with Pan Am, TWA, and one for Howard Hughes. Note that the shot from inside the cabin at 2:09 is actually a DC-3! The only surviving Boeing Model 307 (NC19903), operated by Pan Am, is preserved in flying condition at the Smithsonian Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. To me, she always looked kind of like a 4 engined C-46 Commando! Be sure to check my channel for the BEST in VINTAGE & RARE airliner videos! All planes should have shiny aluminum skins, or paint, ... it looks so pretty. just like AA ..... Located at the Smithsonian Institution, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This was 1 of 3 owned by Pan American World Airways PAA - Boeing 307 Stratoliner as the "Clipper Flying Cloud" Reading some history, this is now the only flying preserved 307, out of total 10 ever built. TWA had 5, Howard Hughs had 1, first one built crashed in test. This also crash landed (just like Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger on the Hudson) on last flight to smithsonian, into Elliott Bay, Seattle, WA March 28, 2002, before being restored again and flown to the smithsonian. Another interesting fact, these models were the 1st to fly 25k feet with a pressurized cabin, whilst all other commercial airliners could only do 10k. Reference - wiki
