The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIII Olympic Winter Games, were a winter multi-sport event which was celebrated from February 13 through February 24, 1980 in Lake Placid, New York, United States of America. This was the second time the Upstate New York village hosted the Games, after 1932. The only other candidate city to bid for the Games was Vancouver-Garibaldi, British Columbia, Canada; they withdrew before the final vote.

The mascots of the Games were "Roni" and "Ronny", two raccoons. The mask-like rings on a raccoon's face recall the goggles and hats worn by many athletes in winter sports.

The sports were played at the Olympic Center (later renamed Herb Brooks Arena), Whiteface Mt., Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Bobsled Run the Olympic Ski Jumps, the Cascade Cross Country Ski Center, and the Lake Placid High School Speed Skating Oval.

Legendary coach Gus Lussi discusses figure skating on the eve of the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid with his foremost student Dick Button. As I understand it, he came to America in 1920 as a consultant for the ski jumping tower in Lake Placid. Either he had skating knowledge from his native Switzerland, or he developed it in the years before World War 2. Much like others in various fields of society, he was applying scientific principles to the sport/art of figure skating. He makes insightful comments on the qualities required of a champion, but I believe we have enterred an age today when one truly has to question the demands of the sport.....is it really worth it? I'm concerned that true champions fall by the wayside, and only the neurotic, psychotic, and criminally insane make it to the top!! (If you're not bonkers when you start in this sport, there is certainly a high probability you will be before your sojourn is over!!) I wonder if he ever anticipated an age when 4-7 top skaters, each investing hundreds of thousands of dollars, would arrive at a championship and skate flawlessly? How does the judging system address that situation? When skating becomes like swimming, track, or downhill skiing (where the difference between first and last is only one one hundreth of a second) is it really worth a life altering committment to the demagogic sirens of uncompromising dedication? I suspect Janet Lynn answered that question for us in 1973!! His comment about Tai and ...
