Please visit us at oneillrealestate.ca or leave a comment. Here's George O'Neill at the outdoor skating oval in Lake Placid, New York. Like The Beach, this skating arena is steeped in history. Known as the James B. Sheffield Olympic Skating Rink, this venue was built for the 1932 Winter Olympics. Jack "The Chief" Shea won gold medals for the 500 metre and 1500 metre speed skating events and his teammate Irving Jaffee achieved golds in the 5000 and 10000 metre skates on this ice. When Lake Placid hosted the Olympics again in 1980, Eric Hieden won 5 golds, setting 4 Olympic records and smashing one world record on this very rink. Today, the 400 metre oval is open all year round for all to skate its legendary track. I'm travelling around it at a much more leisurely rate than your average Olympian!
