The University of Johannesburg (Johannesburg, South Africa) came into existence on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU). Prior to the merger, the Daveyton and Soweto campuses of the former Vista University had been incorporated into RAU. The new institution is the largest contact university in South Africa , with nine faculties spread over five different campuses. It is not uncommon for alumni to still refer to the university incorrectly as RAU.

Johannesburg (Afrikaans pronunciation: [joËhÉnÉsËbÊrx]) also known as Jozi or Jo'burg, is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. The city is one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world[5] and it is one of Africa's only three global cities, the other two being Cairo and Cape Town.[6]. While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa's three capital cities, it does house the Constitutional Court South Africa's highest court. Johannesburg is the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg is served by OR Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international air travel to and from the rest of southern Africa. According to the 2007 Community Survey, the population of the municipal city was 3888180 and the population of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area was 7151447. A broader definition of the Johannesburg metropolitan area, including the Ekhuruleni, the West Rand, Soweto and Lenasia, has a population of 10267700. The municipal city's land area of 1645 km2 (635 sq mi) is very large when compared to other cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2364 /km2 (6120 /sq mi). Johannesburg once again includes Soweto, which was a separate city from the ...

As the world has turned its attention to South Africa to follow the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it is hard to imagine that a little over 20 years ago the country was under the rule of the politically violent and racist governance of Apartheid. How far has South African society evolved since Apartheid was abolished in 1990 and Nelson Mandela became the country's first black president in 1994? Helena Pohlandt-McCormick, associate professor of history at the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts says that while hosting the World Cup brings many advantages to South Africa and allows the country to provide a positive image of Africa to the world, Pohlandt-McCormick is skeptical about the real economic impact for the country and its citizens. "When it comes to analyzing who takes home the 'spoils,' it appears FIFA will reap the biggest profits, to the detriment of the local communities and businesses who have been greatly deprived of a piece of the World Cup profit pie."

A South African Muslim scholar form the University of Johannesburg, Professor Adam Habib, was welcomed back into the US early this month after a ban on his entry was lifted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in January. Under the Bush administration, Habib was linked to terrorism. The reasons for this link are unclear. A spokesperson for Clinton, Assistant Secretary of State PJ Crowley, stated that Habib was not a threat to the United States and that the rationale under which his visa was denied could not be repeated in the future. He added that their latest decision was consistent with President Obamas outreach to Muslims around the world and that we want to encourage a global debate. Speaking at Harvard Law School, Habib took the opportunity to open the dialogue on ideological exclusion in one of his first speaking engagements in the country since the reversal of the ban.
