Stellenbosch University (formally University of Stellenbosch/ ) is a public research university situated in the town of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Other nearby universities are the University of Cape Town and University of the Western Cape.

Stellenbosch University designed and manufactured Africa's first microsatellite, SUNSAT, launched in 1999.

Students are nicknamed Maties. Some claim the term arises from their maroon rugby colours: a tamatie is the Afrikaans translation for tomato. It is more likely to come from the Afrikaans colloquialism maat (meaning "buddy" or "mate") originally used diminutively by the students of the University of Cape Town's precursor, the South African College.

Dagbreek Diski Dance @ Soccer Terminology Booklet release. Trilingual soccer terminology gets South Africans speaking the lingo. Whether it's a handball, header or a hat trick, the language of soccer is characterised by interesting and sometimes confusing terms, usually known only to the players themselves. To spread the lingo of South African football, Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with a number of coaches and researchers, has released a new soccer terminology booklet, just in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The booklet is the result of months of research into football culture, formal soccer terms and the current colloquial lingo used by players and their fans. Published in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans and compiled by the University's Language Centre, it aims to provide a definitive list of all the soccer terminology you might need when watching your favourite team in action. "We often speak of the remarkable spirit that characterises this country," comments Professor Julian Smith, Vice-Rector: Community Interaction and Personnel, who is also responsible for sport at Stellenbosch University. "We see the booklet as an extension of this -- enabling supporters, players and our international visitors the opportunity to speak a shared language. It also forms part of our joint Stellenbosch 2010 initiative with the local Municipality, which seeks to promote soccer within the Stellenbosch community at large. The soccer terminology booklet promotes ...

Ms Lovelyn Nwadeyi, a BA International Studies first year from Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, encouraged prospective students to put aside their preconceived ideas and enrol at SU with an open mind. A record number of more than 2 000 visitors attended an information session for prospective students and their parents at Stellenbosch University (SU) last night (Thu, 7 Oct 2010). The event was hosted in the spacious DF Malan Centre at the Coetzenburg sports grounds to accommodate the large crowd. "It is definitely a record. We are very excited about all the interest. It is very nice to give prospective students and their parents a feeling for the campus," Ms Anne Serfontein, a counselling psychologist attached to SU's Centre for Prospective Students (CPS), said. bit.ly

Stellenbosch University (SU) is opening its research output to the world in a move designed to stimulate research and promote human development, particularly in Africa. Stellenbosch University became the first African university to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. The goal of this international convention is to make research freely and widely available to society. SU has established an open access repository, SUNScholar, which can be accessed by anyone with an internet connection at scholar.sun.ac.za. "The signing of the declaration by the university is a demonstration of its commitment to sharing its research output and other scholarly material with research communities, especially those on the African continent," Ms Ellen Tise, Senior Director of SU's Library and Information Service and President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, said. Among the guest speakers was Mark Shuttleworth, an internet entrepreneur and proponent of open source software. "I believe that the future is an open future and that the institutions leading that process will be the ones that survive the coming shakeout in the education sector and increase their footprint globally," he said.
