Rhodes University (RU or simply Rhodes) is a public university located in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is the province’s oldest university, being one of four universities in that province. It is the fourth oldest university in the country, being preceded by the University of Witwatersrand (1896), Stellenbosch University (1866) and the University of Cape Town (1829).

The university has an enrolment of over 7,000 students, approximately 3,000 of whom live on campus in the various residences while the remaining students (known as oppidans) take residence in digs or in their own homes in town.

Rhodes was founded in 1904 as Rhodes University College, through a grant from the Rhodes Trust and became a university in 1951. It is named after Cecil Rhodes.

Jeeshan Chowdhury, the U of A's newest Rhodes Scholar. November 23, 2005 - In his campus lab, budding scientist and space enthusiast Jeeshan Chowdhury shows off a plastic model of a Star Trek 'tricorder'. The device, which scanned the human body to determine injuries and disease on the popular TV series, may not be science fiction for much longer. Chowdhury is a member of an interdisciplinary research team led by University of Alberta engineer Dr. Chris Backhouse and oncologist Dr. Linda Pilarski. They are presently developing lab-on-a-chip technology which may one day diagnose diseases and genetic conditions in mere seconds. That he's involved in such a cutting-edge project at 22 years of age is an amazing accomplishment, but it's one of many highlights padding Chowdhury's student résumé. His most recent recognition is also one of the most exciting: acceptance to the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship program at Oxford University. Next September, Chowdhury, a medical/PhD student, becomes the 23rd U of A student to attend the British university as a Rhodes Scholar. "So many opportunities have now opened up, I can't even imagine all the things I'll be able to experience," said Chowdhury, noting that world leaders such as Bill Clinton and Jacques Chirac have visited Rhodes House. "It's been so great to be at the U of A, because of the new energy that you can feel here. Just look at the lab we're in. We're in the newest field of nanotechnology, we're privileged to have such ...

The Rhodes University fountain quad was abuzz with activity on Thursday morning when a spontaneous flash mob, inspired by the hit TV series Glee, broke into synchronised dance. The 15-strong group enthralled crowds with high energy dance and complex physical manouvers backed by music that set the crowd in a party mood. Just as suddenly as the dance had began, the flash mob dissipated into the crowds filling the quad, accompanied by loud and enthusiastic applause. The flash mob, in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Week at Rhodes University, created a fun and vibrant atmosphere for participants on the day. 10/31/93 - James A. Rhodes Arena, The University of Akron, Akron, OH Novoselic - "So Hallowe'en's supposed to be a Satanic holiday, little kids in Batman masks who are worshipping the devil, little kids in Barney masks!" Lithium Cobain - "Thanks for coming, good night" Grohl - "Happy Hallowe'en" "The show started with an improvisional intro with the band members in costume for Halloween. Kurt was Barney (with a bottle of Jack Daniel's in his hand, which he apparently chugged through the mask's mesh mouth), Pat was Slash, Dave was a mummy, and Krist was a white-faced "reverse Ted Danson" with "PC" on his forehead for "Politically Correct." (The actor Ted Danson had recently been ridiculed for making a public appearance in black-face with his girlfriend Whoopi Goldberg.)" - NLG

A 2009 University of Louisville graduate has won a Rhodes Scholarship, the oldest and most prestigious award in academia. As a Rhodes Scholar, Monica Marks will spend two years at the University of Oxford in England pursuing a master's of philosophy degree in modern Middle Eastern culture. Marks blazed new trails at UofL. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she traveled the world, mastered new languages, founded and coached the university's Intercollegiate Quiz Bowl Team and won highly-coveted awards and scholarships, including a Fulbright Award, a Critical Language Scholarship from the State Department and the Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship from the UofL College of Arts and Sciences. She graduated May, 2009 with a combined major in political science, womens and gender studies and philosophy. UofL President James Ramsey called Marks a "rock star," and said her accomplishments were "a reaffirmation of our ability to recruit the best students from across Kentucky." Marks grew up in Rush-a small town near Ashland-and comes from a humble family background. Her father owns a small business that sells janitorial products. Neither of her parents graduated from high school and her family's religious beliefs discouraged pursuit of a college degree. After graduating from Russell Independent High School in 2004, Marks applied to several colleges and admits that UofL was her "back-up plan." She now says choosing UofL was "the best decision she ever made." Marks said she ...
