The difference between private and public storage clouds is simple. Where is the cloud deployed? A public cloud is offered as a service, usually over an Internet connection. Private clouds are deployed inside the firewall and managed by the user organization. Locality is a simple difference that drives very unique experiences and capabilities to the end user. Public clouds typically charge a monthly usage fee per GB combined with bandwidth transfer charges. Users can scale the storage on-demand and will never need to purchase storage hardware. Service providers manage the infrastructure and pool resources into capacity that any customer can claim. Private clouds are built from software running on customer-supplied commodity hardware. The storage is typically not shared outside the enterprise and full control is retained by the organization. Scaling the cloud is as simple as adding another server to the pool and the self-managing architecture expands the cloud by adding performance and capacity.

Coinciding with the much-anticipated release of the iPad 2, Rackspace is releasing version 2.0 of its iOS app for Rackspace Cloud. The new app provides system administrators tremendous flexibility in managing their Cloud Servers and Cloud Files and the freedom to do so from virtually anywhere. "With this app, we fully implemented everything in the API," explains Mike Mayo, Senior Developer of Mobile Apps for Rackspace Hosting. "[With the original iOS app], we were mostly trying to hurry up and get an app out in time for launch date. This time, we spent more time on it. We give you more control of your cloud servers, better control of your cloud files, better ways to access cloud files. You can now open them, print them, stream media to an Apple TV—pretty much everything you could possibly pull off on the iPad." The app allows you to see all the Cloud Servers on your account and view details about each server. You can create new cloud servers, rename Cloud Servers, resize Cloud Servers and perform hard and soft reboots. It is functionally the same, feature-for-feature, for both the iPad and iPhone, and, given how intuitive the user interface is for the iOS, using these apps to control your servers can even be faster than doing it from your web browser. Best of all, the app frees system administrators to get out from behind their desks. "The best use for this is if you are a sysadmin controlling resources on our cloud. Get this app and something like iSSH, and then you have ...
