Amre represented India in 11 Test matches scoring one 100 and three 50s with a batting average of 42.50. However, these figures did not help him to become a regular fixture in the national team. He found himself in Indian colours just for two seasons from 1992 to 1994.He was a victim of regionalism. The boss of BCCI was Jagmohan Dalmia at that time,a Bengali while he was a Maharastrian.Even though Dennis Lillee himself said Amre was the best player of pace bowling, even better than Viv Richards and Bishen Bedi said he was the best playr of spin bowling, even better than Gundappa Vishwanath. He had the rare honour of scoring a century in his debut Test match. It came against a South African side that included Allan Donald and Brian McMillan. He was known to be asthmatic. He had a good record in domestic cricket playing for Mumbai Cricket Team, Railways, Rajasthan and Bengal. He also played in South Africa with Boland. His 246 for Rest of India against Bengal is still the highest by any bastman in the Irani Trophy. Amre came from the same school of cricketers as Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, and like Tendulkar and Kambli, he was also coached by Ramakant Achrekar. He is the only Indian cricketer to score a half century on his ODI debut and also a century on his test debut He is the current coach of the Mumbai Cricket Team, and the assistant coach of the Indian Premier League side, Mumbai Indians. |
