The Kurdistan Workers' Party ( or پارتی کار که‌رانی کوردستان Parti Karkerani Kurdistan), commonly known as PKK, also known as KGK and formerly known as KADEK or Kongra-Gel, is a Kurdish organization which has since 1984 been fighting an armed struggle against the Turkish state for an autonomous Kurdistan and greater cultural and political rights for the Kurds in Turkey. The group was founded on 27 November 1978 and was led by Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK's ideology was originally a fusion of revolutionary socialism and Kurdish nationalism - although since his imprisonment, Ocalan has abandoned orthodox Marxism.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization internationally by a number of states and organizations, including the United States and the European Union. Turkey labeled the organization as an ethnic secessionist organization that uses terrorism and the threat of force against both civilian and military targets for the purpose of achieving its political goal.

Kurdistan Workers Party Video

July 1991 The fight for a Kurdish state has been led for over forty years by wealthy landowners. But now a new force has emerged; the PKK, or Kurdish Workers' Party. This film follows the PKK as they move along the mountainous border between Turkish and Iraqi Kurdistan. The border between Turkey and Iraq has been swept away by the UN-declared safe-haven and the PKK are garnering support from Iraqi Kurds. The PKK teach a Maoist philosophy to their recruits and, uniquely among Middle Eastern people, the women study, live and fight along with the men. A film by Mark Stucke. Journeyman Pictures

Turkish police used water cannon, tear gas and baton charges to break up Kurdish demonstrations across the country on Sunday and one local politician died in the protests, a sign of rising tension ahead of the Kurdish New Year this week after authorities rejected Kurdish demands to celebrate it on Monday. Turkey's pro-Kurdish party and Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) armed militants have both called for large demonstrations for Newroz, the Kurdish New Year that begins on March 21, sensing the government, which has strongly backed Arab uprisings, may be vulnerable to pressure from street protests. Both the legal Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and the PKK are demanding a level of autonomy for the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Al Jazeera breaks down the 1984 formation and recent activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Abdullah Ocalan founded the group in 1974 and in 1978 named it the Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan or the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a Marxist-Leninist insurgency fighting for an independent Kurdish state. The PKK took up arms against Turkey in 1984 with the aim of creating an ethnic homeland in the southeast. More than 40000 people have been killed in the conflict since then.

Twenty four soldiers were killed in an alleged guerilla attack by Kurds in southeastern Turkey on Wednesday according to security sources. Militants of the Kurdistan Worker's Party, which is considered radical by Turkey as well as the US and European Union, fired live rounds on a number of military outposts in two districts of the Hakkari province which borders Iraq. The incident caused the largest death toll of Turkish security personnel in years. At least 18 soldiers were also injured in the attack. Kurdish separatists have increased their attacks southeast of the country since July and have killed over 50 Turkish security forces. Wednesday's attacks coincide with a roadside bomb attack allegedly also the work of Kurdish rebels which claimed the lives of five policemen and three civilians in the neighboring Bitlis area.
