IFR flight home from Charleston, WV (KCRW) to Leesburg, VA (KJYO). Visual conditions prevailed with a practically cloudless sky, but very hazy - even with the sun to my back. This video captures my IFR clearance delivery (including my slightly embarrassing request for the full route rather than being able to accept the "as filed" directive), (very short) taxi, takeoff and handoff to departure. Also included is my time-compressed landing at KJYO.

This is the first leg of this year's trek to Wrens, GA to visit family for Thanksgiving. I had technical difficulties with the audio capture so none of this year's Thanksgiving series has the audio I normally have on tape. This video shows an IFR departure from Leesburg, VA (KJYO), my climb through the clouds and my breakout to crystal blue skies on top at 9800'. We had planned to fly straight through to Thomson, GA (KHQU), but biological needs necessitated a stop in North Carolina. My original plan was to land at Person County/Roxboro, NC (KTDF), but the Raleigh controller told me he had a plane go missed there 20 minutes before without seeing the field. (The glideslope was out of service.) That's when we decided to divert to Raleigh/Durham International (KRDU). You'll see me being vectored to intercept the localizer, my landing and taxi to the ramp at KRDU. Landing a Cessna 182 at a large airport like KRDU will often result in "keep your speed up as long as possible" on the approach. I obliged the controller's request, but keeping that extra 30 knots makes those localizer deviations more pronounced. You really have to keep on those needle deflections to keep the localizer captured.

IFR flight from Leesburg, VA to Islip, NY. This is the first time I've flown to New York and I had a nice solid cloud layer to get through before landing. This video gives you a chance to copy a fairly complex route clearance. It also shows my getting a progressive taxi from KISP ground control. It also demonstrates how regional dialects can be difficult to pick up over the radio. OK, maybe it wasn't the dialect, but the listener. Regardless, the ground controller told me "cross runway 6/24, join taxiway Sierra to parking" and I thought he said "cross runway 6/24, join taxiway Sierra squawking."

Highlights of a recent flight from Leesburg, VA (KJYO) to Tarboro, NC (KETC). There was significant IMC throughout the route of flight and I decided to stay low to avoid an icing AIRMET which forecasted icing conditions from 7000 to 10000 feet. As it turned out, I was between layers for about half the flight and I could have flown my original plan of 10000 feet without worry as the temperature was comfortably above freezing. Still, the view and the ride were nice at 6000.
