The George Washington Colonials are the athletic teams of George Washington University. The school sponsors 21 varsity sports (8 men, 11 women), the majority of which compete in the Division I Atlantic 10 Conference. The men's and women's water polo teams compete in the Collegiate Water Polo Association and the women's gymnastics team is independent. The Colonials' colors are buff and blue. George Washington formerly sponsored a varsity football team, which was disbanded in 1966.

DC mayor and George Washington alumnus Vincent Gray (`64) gave a pregame pep talk to the Colonials and it worked as the Colonials opened A-10 play with an inspired 72-67 triumph over visiting La Salle Wednesday night at GW's Charles E. Smith Center. Gray was surprised by his alma mater with four of his former intramural basketball teammates who played with him for the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. They are Stephen Haenel (AA '64), Neil Hausig (BA '65), Garry Lyle (attendee '67) and Norm Neverson (BA '67).
