The Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) is a college athletic conference which operates mostly on the United States' eastern seaboard. It also has two member schools in Ohio: Dayton and Xavier, located in Dayton and Cincinnati, respectively. Another member, Saint Louis is located in St. Louis, Missouri. Although some of its members are state-funded, more than half of its membership is made up of private, Catholic institutions. Despite the name, there are 15 partial or full-time members: 14 basketball and other sports, and one affiliate member participates in women's field hockey only.

La Salle Explorers Women's Soccer had four shutouts in the early part of the '04 season, quickly surpassing their '03 win total (3). It was a whole new ball game for La Salle defense under the coaching of Paul Royal and Dan Mannella. As of Oct. 10, the Explorers were nonetheless in dire need of wins, with a 1-4 conf. record and six games left. The Explorers first took on Temple and St. Joe's, both on the road. La Salle picked up two wins by 3-0 scores. The Explorers continued to make magic happen on the road, shutting out the team with the 2nd best record in the conference (Rhode Island). Having regained their .500 record and confidence along with it, La Salle furthered their chances by beating UMass in come from behind fashion. A long distance shot by Kelly Lyons careened squarely into the net in the 72nd minute to tie the game, followed thereafter by a Shannon Plunkett gamewinner with only 1 :14 left to go in regulation. La Salle could make a fifth seed playoff berth clinch official at home with a win in their final weekend game against Xavier. Xavier scored first, as Nicole Giesting's professional caliber flip-and-throw-in maneuver was too much for Explorer GK Schamberger to surpass. Giesting already had a team leading three assists on the season, and she notched another one at La Salle's expense. Laura Giesting scored a goal, Nicole Giesting got the assist. La Salle defense tightened up, just as they had all season long, and the Explorers got on the board in the 2nd ...

Sophomore guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) scored a game-high 22 points in Friday's Atlantic Sun Conference tournament semifinal against Belmont, but none more crucial than the final three. With Stetson down 46-45 with 1.4 seconds left, McGowan received an inbounds pass and released a running heave as she crossed halfcourt, swishing it through at the buzzer to boost the second-seeded Hatters (19-12) to a 48-46 victory and a berth in tomorrow's A-Sun championship game at Mercer's University Center.
