Derren Victor Brown (born 27 February 1971) is a British illusionist, mentalist, painter, writer and sceptic. He is known for his appearances in television specials, stage productions and British television series such as Trick of the Mind and Trick or Treat. Since the first broadcast of his show Derren Brown: Mind Control in 2000, Brown has become increasingly well known for his "mind-reading" act. He has written books for magicians as well as the general public. His caricature artwork has received gallery exhibition and is available in a single volume documenting his portrait collection.

Though his performances of mind-reading and other feats of mentalism may appear to be the result of psychic or paranormal practices, he claims no such abilities and frequently denounces those who do. Brown states at the beginning of his Trick of the Mind programmes that he achieves his results using a combination of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship". Using his knowledge and skill, he appears to be able to predict and influence people's thoughts with subtle suggestion, manipulate the decision making process and read the subtle physical and psychological signs or body language that indicate what a person is thinking.

This is a video cut from "Trick of The Mind" series aired in the UK. The clip here is taken directly from Season 1 -- Episode 1. This is one of my favorite segments done by Derren. It explains for the most part how he did achieve the feat, and the trick is quite clever. Don't get too hung up on the ending though; it's merely a trick. I've got all of Derren's work on my computer, and if you're interested in somehow obtaining the information, email me at tranceriver@gmail.com and we'll talk. Cheers

I reply to a video where it seems Derren Brown hypnotizes a man into willfully giving up his belongings. I give an explanation for how this might have been done. Watch the referenced video first: www.youtube.com (Here's the original video link but seems to have died): www.youtube.com Notes on a few things: - I noticed in the video I keep saying "pattern break" while "pattern interrupt" is the more common term. - In asking the man directions he distracts him, but more specifically it causes the man to enter an altered state where he internally processes for an answer. Like with the handshake interrupt this puts the man out of his conscious mode and invokes a short trance state. Google "transderivational search" for more info. - Giving the man the bottle is additionally a persuasion technique... I give you something first, then you give me something.
