Dorothy Dietrich is an American stage magician and escapologist, and the first and only woman to have performed the bullet catch in mouth. She was also the first woman to perform a straitjacket escape while suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a burning rope (as shown on a Home Box Office Special. The 2006 Columbia Encyclopedia included Dietrich among their "8 most noted magicians of the late 20th century", and entertainment writer Samantha Hart in her definitive book "The Hollywood Walk of Fame" called her a "world-class magician" and "one of the world's leading female magicians". Early on as a teenager she already was dubbed as "The First Lady of Magic" Dietrich has duplicated many of Houdini's original escapes, and has gone one step further by doing the Jinxed Bullet Catch Stunt - the one that Houdini backed away from.

This is an opening Dorothy Dietrich has done for college dates and some industrials. As you can tell from the big response it all went over big. Sorry for the bad lighting as it was a home video and the opening is intentionally dark. The kids loved it. This was followed by one of her signature routines, Sawing a MAN in Half. She has done it with everything from a electric saw, a hand saw, a bow saw, a guillotine, a rope, and a sword penetration. She is the founder of The Houdini Museum, the only building in the world totally devoted to Houdini. Dietrich is the first and only woman to accomplish the Catching of a Bullet in her mouth, often called "The Jinxed Bullet Catch" and The Trick that scared Houdini. At least 12 men have died attempting this feat. Ms. Dietrich now holds the World's record in several categories. Dorothy Dietrich is often called "The Female Houdini" , "The World's #1 Female Magician" and was the first to be called "The First Lady of Magic". Will put up fuller versions as I find them Here legendary Dorothy Dietrich speaks to women having to cook and getting sawed in half. She has blazed the way for women in magic in many ways. In her presentations she raises the bar and does feats even the male magicians will not do. Including having a rifle pointed at her face for the bullet catch under test conditions, never before done by a woman, and escaping from a burning rope hanging high in the air from a parachute ride never done before or since by man or woman. When not traveling she heads up the only building in the world entirely devoted to Houdini, at Scranton's Houdini Museum. Besides the white poodle shown, she travels with yet another poodle (black), 5-6 doves, a rabbit and two ducks and other livestock. She continues to do the original Houdini Seances each Halloween, that includes the Houdini Family and that was passed on from Beatrice Houdini after 10 years to Walter B. Gibson who then made Dorothy promise to Dorothy to continue them. Dorothy Dietrich is often called "The Female Houdini" , "The World's #1 Female Magician" and was the first to be called "The First Lady of Magic". Columbia University Press and Encyclopedia called her "one of the most noted magicians of the late 20th century." DorothyDietrich.com or check out her page on wikipedia.

Dorothy Dietrich did escapes when most women in magic were only assistants, or in some cases even today, did a little magic as part of their husbands act as an appendage. She was unique starting out as a teenager and startling as a woman who stood totally on her own daring to do stand up magic including escapes that women would never dared do. In some cases escapes and stunts so dangerous even men would not attempt them. She has lived to see her innovations become "standards" including doing the entire Strait (Straight) Jacket Escape standing up. Prior to that the standard way was do roll and push on the floor as Houdini did and later copied universally by all magicians right up to Randi and others. It never dawned on magicians to do it any other way in their act, until Dorothy came along. She is the founder of The Houdini Museum, the only building in the world totally devoted to Houdini.
