Nació en Columbus, Ohio, en Estado Unidos, el 20 de julio de 1869. Desde los 7 años se sintió atraído por la magia. Trabajó desde muy pequeño como vendedor de diarios, como mozo, ya la vez realizaba para sus amigos, trucos de magia que aprendía de un libro que se llamaba "Modern Magic", de Hoffmann. A los 17 estudió medicina, y para profundizar sus estudios quiso continuarlos en Filadelfia; emprendió el viaje en un tren que pasaba por Albany, donde se enteró de que actuaba uno de sus ídolos, el mago Alexander Herrmann, y no pudiendo resistir la tentación de verlo actuar se bajó para ver el Show. Y tanto le fascinó el arte de Herrmann que continuó viendo todos los shows de su gira y decidió que él también sería mago. Practicó durante años en un circo los trucos que fue mejorando de a poco, y con los que llegó a impresionar al emperador Chino, al Japonés, al de Austria, al Príncipe de Gales, al Presidente Americano, ya muchas otras personalidades.
