Reshma Sings - Bulleh Shah ****************************** About Singer: Reshma, (not to be mistaken for former Soviet air base name " Reshma" :D ) is a renowned folk singer of Pakistan, She is popular in India too. It has the ability to make listeners believe not only in passion, but experience all its manifestations the torture of waiting for a beloved, the ecstacy of union, the sharp pain of betrayal, the sadness of loss. She says she does not have any training in classical music. In 2004 her rendition of Ashkan Di Gali Vich Mukaam De Gaya was in the top ten of the Indian charts. Her most famous song is "Lambi Judai", sung for a Bollywood film Hero. Once asked Reshma How did you decide to sing in a Bollywood film Hero ? She she replied "The director of Who Tera Naam Tha, Kuku Kohli came to meet me in London where I had a concert. He asked me if I would sing in his film and I told him, When you have travelled all the way to invite me with so much affection how can I say no." Mannu Parr Laga Dey Vey - Aashiq Hussain Jatt (Punjabi Folk) (audio) ********************************** Sohni Mahiwal is one of the four popular tragic romances of the Punjab and Sindh, the other three are Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiba and Sassi Punnun. It is also popular in Sindh and across the South Asia, the story is one of the most prominent examples of medieval poetic legends in the Punjabi and Sindhi languages. Sohni, Sohni, the potter's daughter Sohni was the daughter of a potter named Tula, who lived in Gujrat town in the Punjab near the banks of the Chenab on the caravan trade route between Bukhara and Delhi. As soon as the 'Surahis' (water pitchers) and mugs came off the wheels, she would draw floral designs on them and transform them into masterpieces of art. Izzat Baig of Bukhara Izzat Baig, the rich trader from Bukhara (Uzbekistan), came to India on business but when he saw the beautiful Sohni in the town of Gujrat on the Chenab in Punjab, he was completely enchanted. Instead of keeping 'mohars' (gold coins) in his pockets, he roamed around with his pockets full of love. Just to get a glimpse of Sohni, he would end up buying the water pitchers and mugs everyday. Sohni lost her heart to Izzat Baig. Instead of making floral designs on earthenware, she started building castles of love in her dreams. Izzat Baig sent off his companions to Bukhara. He took up the job of a servant in the house of Tula, Sohni's father. He would even take their buffaloes for grazing. Soon ...

This is the story of "Rustam and Sohrab" from the great Shahnama (Book of the Kings). The Shahnama is a poetic epic written by the Persian/Tajik poet Ferdowsi around 1000 AD. The Shahnama tells the mythical and historical past of Persia from the creation of the world up until the Arab invasion of Persia. The Shahnama, written in Persian, has been pivotal for reviving the Persian language subsequent to the influence of Arabic. The Book of the Kings is regarded as a literary masterpiece which reflects Persia's history, cultural values, its ancient religion, Zoroasterianism, and its profound sense of nationhood. This particular story of Rustam and Sohrab is only one of the many chapters in the Shahnama. Rustam has always been a hero to Persians/Tajiks as well as other Persian speakers. The Shahnama is very important, especially nowadays, because contrary to what people think today, it does not represent just the political country of Iran. Instead, the epic covers parts of modern-day Afghanistan, as well as Iran, Tajikistan, and the cities of Samarqand and Bukhara. Though the peoples of these regions are separated against their will by such political borders it can not change the fact that they share the same language, culture and history and, importantly, Rustam is still their hero. The Shahnama is valued above the Quran and fortunately the Persians/Tajiks are rediscovering their roots and shaking loose from the hold that Arabic had on them. They are realizing just how ...
