Zangla Monastery is home to around 150 lamas and is located near a ruined hilltop castle, and an old nunnery. It has some exquisite wall paintings. Zangla is the central point on the Padum-Stongdey-Zangla-Karsha-Padum trip, covering most of the cultural sites of Zanskar including the Zangla monastery. The great Hungarian scholar Sándor Kőrösi Csoma made the first English-Tibetian Dictionary while living at Zangla Monastery in 1823. The dictionary was published a year later in 1824. |
