WGHP Video

DAVDSON COUNTY, NC (WGHP) — A television cameraman was attacked Thursday afternoon while shooting video of alleged malnourished horses in Davidson County. WGHP received a news tip Wednesday regarding concerns over two horses owned by Danny Kirkus Sr. County Commissioner Cathy Dunn and a member of the US Equine Rescue League shared concerns over the welfare of a couple horses. Chris Weaver, a cameraman for WGHP-TV, was shooting video of the horses alongside a public road in Davidson County on Thursday when Kirkus Sr. approached him holding a large stick and a bucket of horse feed. Kirkus Sr. swung the stick at the cameraman twice, hitting him once on the lower leg. RAW VIDEO: Man Attacks News Cameraman The cameraman and a FOX8 reporter returned to the television truck where they were again approached by Kirkus Sr. The suspect again raised the stick at Weaver but did not swing. The cameraman was not seriously injured. The Davidson County Sheriff's Department arrested Kirkus and charged him with two felonies including assault with a deadly weapon. Sheriff David Grice said they have received several calls about the horses over the past year but said the treatment "does not rise to the level of abuse."

Hands down, this is the best of the analog TV farewells from the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina. Features the final five minutes or so of the FOX 8 10:00 News with Bob Buckley and Julie Luck. There's a trip down Channel 8's memory lane, the National Anthem, and the button-pushing ceremony at the transmitter site in Sophia, NC. This was recorded "over the air" using rabbit ears and a VCR. I've also included at the end a recording from cable of the final moments at the transmitter site, followed by the opening of that night's episode of "Seinfeld".

Very similar to the 1987 clip, but has a woman announcing (whose name I do not know) and a brief video clip of then VP and General Manager David Boylan welcoming input from viewers. The clip utilizes the same Piedmont Airlines SSB clip as the 1987 version.

WGHP Evening Newscast with Fred Blackman, Meg MacDonald, Frank Deal, and Dan McReynolds. This studio was in an old retrofitted ballroom of a downtown High Point Sheraton Hotel which housed the TV station from October of 1963 until March of 1984. That building's still standing and is a housing community for senior citizens. However, to my knowledge nothing's been done to the areas that housed TV station--still empty shells... including the ballroom.

A video montage of Triad-area folks at work and play as well as some views of numerous Triad landmarks. Among these are the Old Guilford Mill near Greensboro and the Reynolds Building and Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. The clip utilizes slow-motion and time-lapse videography with New Age music and no announcer. This was also used by Channel 8 at sign-on time as well as sign-off until the station's purchase by FOX in 1995. My apologies for the rather dark-looking video, for that's how it was recorded.
